An excerpt from chapter two
“Can I go now?” Amanda asked, inching towards the door.
“Yes. Of course.” Mr. Turner nodded at her. She swiveled to go, but he stopped her again. “Wait, what are your hours?” He said, “and your day off.”
“I’m 8 to 5, and I haven’t chosen a day.” She said it while looking at the door. Amanda did not want to look at his face anymore. She knew what was wrong now. But, she believed Mr. Turner was telling the truth too. And the pieces that she had heard all confirmed one thing. He liked her.
“You should choose Wednesday.” He explained, “she’s out of the house from 8:40 am to practically midnight. She’s never home on Wednesday.”
“OK,” Amanda replied, still not looking at him and still inching forward
“Amanda, we are the only two real people in this house.” He muttered softly. She glanced at him then because his words shocked her. He was looking down at her, and his eyes were pleading. “There is something wrong with her and all the people she hires. Don’t trust any of them.”
“OK,” Amanda responded, inching backward now, away from him. “Bye.” She added. And Amanda bolted out the door.
