Suddenly everything grew silent around her. There was no longer the distant noise of traffic. There was no chirping or squawking of birds. There were no voices or the laughter of children. It was utterly silent. It was like someone had hit the mute button on the TV.
Katherine kept her eyes closed and her head down as tears continued to fall. All the worry of the last two years and especially of the most recent days overwhelmed her completely. It filled her with intense fear. Then an instant later, it slipped away. It was like the inhaling and exhaling of a single breath.
She heard a soft rustling in the weeping willow tree. A cool breeze drifted over her head. Then, as before, many days ago, it seemed, at the end of another game in the past, she heard a voice. It came from behind her and above her, or possibly from her head. But deep inside she knew that it was coming from someone real and alive standing behind her.
“Why are you crying?” The voice inquired. “What’s wrong, Katherine?” It was the same voice, the one who helped her after the last home game. He spoke her name. She felt a soft, warm touch on her left shoulder. How did he know her name? She must have fallen asleep. It was possible. “Tell me what’s wrong.” The voice spoke kindly.
