Lea needed more air. Why was he talking to her? He had left that night and said he would stay away; he had not said anything to her. Instead, Darren had directed his statements towards Blake. Each one burned like flame. But now he was speaking to her. It didn’t make sense. Lea wanted to cover her eyes to keep in tears. But her right hand hurt. And her left hand had gotten stuck between her body and the couch. If Lea had time, she could move, but she couldn’t do it quickly enough. She had to look at Darren, as he had asked her. She turned her head and met his eyes. But it was already too late; tears were streaming down her face.
Darren sat back on his heels; he caught one glimpse of her eyes. Then the tears started to stream down her cheeks. In that one moment, her eyes looked so hurt, so broken. Even Blake had not looked that way when he cried the day he came home. Darren knew why his brother had problems from combat overseas. But Lea hadn’t even looked this broken in his truck after his vehicle struck her. When she woke up in the hospital, her face was defiant.
