He murmured into her ear. “It’s okay. You are going to be okay. I will keep you safe.” She could feel his breath moving past, caressing her left ear, resulting in a tingling sensation. The serenity that had been torn from her moments before returned.
She wanted to peek. She wanted to, but she didn’t. She kept her eyes tightly fastened. “How will I know that you are around and that I am safe?” She mumbled back.
She felt his chin brush her head above her left ear. “Because,” he said, still speaking in a whisper. “I will always be here to keep you safe for the rest of my life.” Then he gave both her hands a squeeze, and he moved away, letting go of her.
Katherine’s senses were shouting at her again. “Don’t let him get away!!!” But she stood still. It was as if she had turned to stone. Her eyes remained sealed. The electricity was still surging from one corner of her body to the other in ripples. She could hear her heart thumping in her ears.
But now, she could also hear the commotion of the other students. They were still shouting and laughing. Car engines were rumbling to life, and car stereos were pounding out songs. The disturbances were coming from the front of her and to her right.
