Adara didn’t stay to hear her mother’s reply. Instead, she rose to her feet and fled out of the room, nearly stumbling in her high heels. Marshall was right behind her. But unfortunately, she didn’t discern his presence behind her till she practically tripped over the first step of the staircase.
Marshall yanked her left arm, preventing her from falling and keeping her from heading up the stairs. Adara didn’t glance at him but struggled to break free of his clasp. “I think your sister is right. You need to be checked by a doctor.” He was speaking softly in her ear.
From the doorway into the living room came the sound of Adara’s mother’s voice raised in anger. “But it’s going to be all over the news tonight! You know how curious people are. I’ll never hear the end of it.”
Adara jerked her arm away from Marshall, and he let her go. She had the glass in her hand, but she dropped it onto the red-colored carpet. The cup didn’t break but landed on its side. Adara gazed at the spreading water. Slowly it created a shiny hue on the rug. The texture reminded her of blood. She felt sick and turned away rapidly, then began to run up the stairs. She used the railing to haul herself up and keep her balance. Her head felt light, and spots were swimming before her eyes.
“Adara?” Jody called after her. She joined Marshall at the foot of the stairs. They were both gazing up at her, watching her progress.
Adara did not hesitate when she heard her name. She kept moving till she had reached the top of the stairs. But Adara paused for a moment, hand still on the railing. She was uncertain. What would occur if she let go of the rail? Adara felt so lightheaded. As she stood there, the world around her turned unexpectedly black. She couldn’t see anything. The hallway in front of her disappeared from her sight. She wasn’t there anymore. She wasn’t at the top of the stairs holding onto the railing. Instead, a memory, a dream without being asleep, encircled her.
