“The Day the Skyfel: Ground Zero” snippet

She did not have a warning. One minute she was smiling and thanking God for life. The next minute something hit her from above, smashed right into her right side. She did not have time to react or figure out what had hit her. She toppled sideways and off the path. She rolled a little; shrieking filled her ears, but it was not her shrieking. It was a woman, the thing that had hit her was a woman, and she was shrieking.
Leo looked back in time to see Ana grab onto the side of the cliff with her fingernails digging into the dirt and rock. “Ana.” He bellowed. Leo grabbed her left hand. He gripped it and managed to wrap her left hand around his right hand, holding her on the cliff.
But Ana was slipping. Her leg pulled taught. The woman had grabbed ahold of her right ankle. It burned; it felt like someone was yanking her leg off her body. Ana was gritting her teeth and holding on with everything she had, but the woman was pulling her off with just as much force.
“Ana,” Leo whispered. He was searching her face. Something was wrong; he felt something had happened to her lower half; she was frozen and grinding her teeth with a look of sheer pain on her face.
Ana managed to look into Leo’s eyes. There were tears now, and they poured out as she showed Leo the panic she felt. “Something has my foot.” She gasped and squeezed his hand back weakly. “I’m being pulled off the rock. I can’t hold on.” She was sobbing now. “Leo, you have to let me go. There is no point in both of us dying.”
