I fought back the tears and wrapped my fingers through his collar, and began pulling him towards the door. Stan had already threatened him once, and I had no doubt he would think of killing him if I was successful at getting away. I was stumbling out of the front door pulling Buster along with me, when I heard the back door open, hitting the coffee table with a thud. I didn’t even wait. I began staggering towards my car. I could hear Stan behind me. He was swearing up a storm and stomping towards the front door.
I didn’t even walk around to the driver’s side. I opened the passenger side and let Buster go. He immediately jumped inside. I heard the front door slam open, and I dove into my car, banging my knee so badly I couldn’t even breathe. I used my left arm, feeling my joint pop out of the socket. But I did it. I hit the lock button on the door just as Stan reached it.
We stared at each other for a moment through the glass. I was in so much pain I wasn’t sure I could get into the driver’s seat. Suddenly he hit the door with such a force my window rattled. He put his face right against the glass. His eyes were burning. “I will tell your mom you’ve been keeping secrets from her about a relationship with the man who gave you the locket if you report what just happened.” My window was cracked ever so slightly.
I still couldn’t move. I was stuck on the floor of the passenger seat. When I left the house, I hadn’t had a plan. I had only wanted to get away from him. I hadn’t wanted to be violently assaulted anymore. But his words put a sudden deep longing into my chest. Erik, I wanted to go to Angwin to see Erik.
