“You are awake,” he proclaimed, and this time, there was no mistaking the joy in his voice.
“Why are you here?” She asked. Finally, she was able to ask her question. There wasn’t anything else she could have asked. What do you say to a stranger that is always bedside when you wake and hasn’t explained why they’re there?
Darren looked surprised and slightly embarrassed. “Because I hit you with my truck,” he responded, struggling a little to find the words.
“But it’s not your fault.” She explained. “Why do you feel like you’re responsible.” She began to run out of oxygen again as she spoke the long sentences.
“I was driving my truck, and you were in the road. I hit you.” He replied, wrinkling his brow. “I should have been able to miss you. But I hit you. How is it not my fault?”
“It is not your fault because I stood in the road waiting for you to hit me,” Lea explained. She began to struggle, trying to sit up again. Finally, she could get slightly up on one side after a few minutes. But her pain worsened.
“You wanted to be hit? Why?” Now, it was Darren’s turn to ask the questions. He studied her.
“Because I wanted to die,” she announced it without ceremony and matter of factly without emotion. Exactly why shouldn’t she confess the truth? Maybe if she were honest, he would go away. His leaving the room and never returning was what she wanted. She narrowed her eyes to block out the light and watched him for signs of movement.
