“Moment by Moment”

But while trying to soften the landing, she didn’t realize she would land on her left foot first at the wrong angle. The crash came with an echo. Everyone in the gym heard it and stopped, trying to figure out what had happened. Katherine herself had felt and listened to the crack when her foot hit the floor. She knew it was broken without being told.
It startled her, and she put her head down before coming to a stop to try to see. She hit her head hard on the base of the bleachers. She lay there stunned for a second. The lights in the room around her were flickering. At least they were for her. It went in surges, bright, dim, bright, dim. She could hear her heartbeat in her ears. It seemed like the room had gone silent, except for the sound of her heart.
She was the center of attention. The only two people who were trying to move away were Heidi and Brenda. Everyone else was moving closer. “Who is it?” “It’s Kathy.” Were said over and over. “Is she okay?” “I don’t know.” “She isn’t moving!” “Was she knocked out?”
Finally, her brother was beside her. Katherine saw a head come slowly into her vision. It was blocking the lights. Who was it? She could not focus. Was it Justin? Justin! She should have listened to him. She should have gone with him.
“Kathy? Kathy! Can you hear me? Can you move?” Mark was trying to get a response. But she was not listening or could not hear him. He was checking all her arms and legs. He was confident, from the position of her left foot, that it was broken.
A voice boomed above his voice. “Stand back! Give her room!!” It was Mr. Mac. He was a drill sergeant. But when someone was hurt, he took it seriously. And this girl was not faking. He always could tell the difference.
