“Moment by Moment”

She was back on her feet and dragging her blue dress out of the closet by the time her mom came back. “I got all three of them! It is amazing. Not one voicemail! Mark is at someone’s house. He said he was going to bring some girl. I do not recall hearing the name before. It started with B, something like Briana. I don’t know.”
Katherine looked at her sharply. “Not Brenda?” She said, feeling suddenly very numb all over.
“I don’t know. It might have been. Why, do you know her?”
Katherine gulped and managed to get out a “Yeah, I do.” Brenda? At dinner? She had a vision flash through her mind. Brenda was sitting across the table from Katherine and glaring at her. But she didn’t know that for sure. She honestly didn’t even know her mom was speaking about Brenda. There had to be a lot of other girls at her school with names that started with B. There probably was a Briana. But Katherine had a sinking feeling. She felt something else was coming. Something that she had been sensing the last couple of days. And that thing was coming closer with each moment.
Her mom was looking at her. “Don’t you like her?” She asked.
Katherine tried to calm herself down enough to speak and answer. “She’s okay.” She lied. “I guess. I do not know her. She’s Debbi’s friend.” Her mom was still looking at her, waiting for more information. “I don’t think she likes me very much.”
“Why not? What has she said to you?” Her mom was not happy now, and she was now in mom mode. Her hands were on her hips.
Katherine did not want to go into that. She didn’t want to say any more on the subject. But her mom was standing there waiting. “Not much, I guess.” Katherine decided to lie. It was easier. She couldn’t very well say, “Mom, she made me cry at school the other day. Mom, she hates me. I know she does. Mom, I can’t go to dinner if she is there.”
“Well,” her mom uncrossed her arms. “Maybe you’re wrong. Or she needs to get to know you better. This may be just what the two of you need.” Her mom was happy again. She smiled. “I see you found that dress. You’ve never worn it anywhere before,
