“Why do you say that? What do you mean? I don’t understand.” She felt a slight feeling of panic rising from someplace deep inside of her core. Katherine yearned to reach out to grab him, but the closed door was in the way. She didn’t move.
“I am worried about circumstances and how they fall into place. Things do not always go the way they should, even if you know what will happen. You know, Katherine, existence is not easy to control.” He trailed off for a moment, then started again. “I just got a bad feeling about something; I can’t explain it.”
“Should we leave here?” She asked, peeking beyond him to the empty lot, then behind her, to the trees, where he was still looking. She felt suddenly as if someone or something was there, reaching towards her.
“No, not here, not now.” He replied, smiling again. Justin looked at her and met her eyes when she peered back at him. “I am sure we are safe for now, safe here.” His hands were deep in his jacket pockets.
“Are you cold? Do you want to come in?” She asked, pointing towards the passenger seat.
“I don’t know.” He said, looking slightly uneasy at the suggestion.
She nodded, “I feel like taking a walk. Would you go for a walk with me?” She inquired.
“Yes, I rather walk.” He smiled wide
“Okay.” She turned the car back on and rolled up her windows. Then she got out, locking the door behind her. Katherine swiveled to him. “It’s so quiet here, isn’t it?”
He nodded, agreeing. “Sometimes, I think it’s too quiet,” Justin replied suddenly as an afterthought.
“Why?” She tilted her head again, smiling as she did so.
“I don’t know. I guess it seems like it could be the calm before the storm. You’ve heard that old cliché.” He glanced at her and shrugged. She nodded. He added, “I am ready for our walk.” So, they passed on into the woods, receding into silence.
Katherine reached out and linked her arm through his. He turned to look down at her and smiled. So, they strolled together through the silence before the storm.
