“Hello?” I asked, praying it was not my mother.
“Thank God, Carrie,. It is me, Ben. Are you still in the bathroom?” I recognized his voice.
“Yes?” I replied.
“Can you walk still? I didn’t think you wanted me to make a scene but I will if you need me to. And there were two guys out here. But they have moved off since I am two feet from the door.” Ben explained.
I suddenly felt like crying. He was out there, and he was right; I did not want a scene. But was I still able to walk out? I made a quick decision and started to fumble with my high heels. “I’m going to try.” I replied. “I am having trouble seeing and standing.”
“That is not good. Keep talking to me. If you go quiet, I am sending someone in.” Ben said firmly.
He was taking charge. I felt relieved. “Thank you.” I said. And I threw one of the heels on the floor.
“No problem.” He said softly. And his voice sounded kind and gentle.
“I’m just taking off my shoes.” I explained. “I was an idiot and wore heels.”
“That is okay. I am not going anywhere.” He sounded a little like he was smiling.
I threw The other heel on the floor. “Okay. I am coming now. I have colored my hair it is red.” I said, hoping he understood.
“You colored your hair?” He sounded surprised.
“ yes I just want you to know it’s me when I come out.” I felt a lump in my throat. I was halfway to the door. I was walking along holding onto the sinks one by one as I moved along.
“That is okay. I am sure I will recognize you.”
“I am wearing makeup too. And do not have my glasses.” I was trying to get him to understand.
“Carrie. It is okay. You are on the phone with me. I will know it is you.”
I was at the door but suddenly I had a fear. “Are you still by the door?” I asked, I had frozen at the last sink.
“I promise. As soon as you come out the door, you will see me. I am right here.” Ben was talking calmly. I wanted to cry again. He didn’t deserve this. He was a nice guy and had only offered me friendship and I had turned him down in favor of coming down to this hell hole.
