“Hey.” He said as she gained her balance. Her body was protesting sharply with pain. “What’s your name?”
She almost slipped up. “So….” She began to say, gripping the sink. But she stopped abruptly. No! what was wrong with her. What was a boy’s name that started with S? There had to be one. “Sam!” She blurted out. Her voice was almost normal. Sophia hoped he did not notice the hesitation.
“Come on, Sam!” The stranger said, “Let’s go to the living room and get you some medication and bandaging supplies.” She turned slowly. “It is just to the left here and down the hall.” The man was motioning, but as he turned away, he said, “My name is Cameron.”
Sophia, so consumed by the pain and the intense desire to keep her gender a secret, almost did not notice. She had made her way into the hall, in fact, and was following him down it, leaning heavily on the wall and grimacing with each step. It was a full minute before her brain registered it. “Cameron.” Her brain repeated.
Sophia, as Sam, slowly stopped at the door to the living room. She almost felt that her leg was growing numb to the pain. Was it hurting as much as it had been? “Cameron!” Her brain insisted.
He had stopped in front of Sophia and started moving some things around that she could not see in the darkroom. She was hesitant to enter the room. Her brain screamed at her one more time. “HIS name is CAMERON.” She froze in the middle of the doorway. No. It could not be, Sophia told herself, straining her eyes, attempting to focus on the man in front of her. It could not be THAT Cameron. Indeed there were other people in the area with that same name.
At that moment, a light went on in front of her. The light was not from Cameron’s flashlight. This was a full-fledged light that lit the whole room in one flash. Sophia automatically placed a hand over her eyes to shield them. The other hand found the doorframe to steady herself. Pain shot through her mind; the light was so bright.
“Oooh, sorry bro. I should have warned you.” Cameron said. He looked at her, or rather, Sam.
