After the Rain

“Buddy will be so happy to see you.” He smiled at me again, opened his door, but paused. “I do not want him to jump on you and ruin that dress.
“Don’t worry about it; I’ll probably never wear it again.” I shrugged and put my hand on the handle.
“Let me get the door for you.” Ben jumped out and ran around to open my door. “And take my hand, just in case.” I was about to protest and tell him I was okay. But as I stood up, the world around me swam and danced. I grabbed his arm, thankful he had thought of it.
My bare feet had no problem walking up the rest of the driveway and the stairs. But I felt ridiculous. As he unlocked the front door, I looked down at my feet. The toes were turning white with the cold. He pushed the door open, and there was Buddy. He was indeed overjoyed to see me. He started licking my hands and wiggling his rear.
Ben started to pull me inside. But I hesitated. “What’s wrong?” came his instant response.
I didn’t look up at him. Instead, I pointed down at my feet. “Do you mind my bare feet?” I asked. It was hard to see them amid the dog’s paws and legs dancing around me.
“Do not even worry about it. And if you are cold, you can wear a pair of my socks.” He was shooing buddy back with his free hand without much success. “Hold on, let me get his collar.” He grabbed Buddy and pulled him back so that I could step inside without tripping. “Come over here and sit on the couch. And I will put him outside for a little while.”
“It is okay. I do not mind.” I replied. I sank into the couch, thankful to have a solid surface under my rear again. I giggled as Buddy licked my bare knee.
Ben watched me for a split second, surprised at the giggle. But then he continued by saying. “He has not been out in a few hours; it is time for him to go. I will put him out for a little while. I will be right back.” He walked away.
