Ana did not understand half of it. But she did understand enough to panic. She looked up at Leo and whispered. “This is bad.”
Leo nodded. Then he pointed, whispering back. “Target is Julianne, right? “
Ana nodded, staring at his finger and the words.
“This says she isn’t human.” Leo’s heart was pounding in his ears, and he felt as if he were going to throw up, but it explained a lot of the life he had been living with Julianne.
“It says the other names we provided are assumed assimilated. What do you think that means? That they are not human either?” Ana hissed and gripped his arm.
“Ana, do you remember what I told you the first day we met?” Leo grabbed her hand in his.
“There was so much, but do you mean not trusting your wife or the people she hires?” Ana whispered. Leo nodded. “You said we were the only real people here. And I thought you were trying to seduce me. I was terrified.” Ana’s eyes were huge. Leo gave her a side hug and turned back to the paper.
“Disengage immediately. Does that mean we should leave tonight?” Leo asked, pointing to the paper.
Ana stared at it. “I don’t know.” She was shivering suddenly. “But I would say disengage means leave and immediately is now. So it could be. But how would they know when I would get the letter?” she was searching his eyes.
“Look, Ana,” Leo took her hands in his. “We just brought a house today. We do not need to be here anymore. You were quitting after Friday. It is only two days sooner. So I say you pack what you need, and I will pack my stuff, just enough to not have to go shopping tonight, and then we’ll go to a hotel in Marin for a week. I will bring you back to the agency tomorrow for the debriefing. But as we were planning to leave next week and I have listed the house to go to Julianne, why stay? What more of a push do we need? I have a few essential things I would like to bring, but it should not take more than thirty minutes. What about you?”
“Thirty minutes is plenty, but what should we do with the car? I don’t want to be separated! I can’t be without you.” She felt a few tears slip down her face.
