The Day the Skyfel: Shadows of the Past

“Sam.” He declared, shaking his shoulder a little. “Sam!” Sam made a noise, an incredibly soft sound. Cameron thought the sound could belong to a child. “Sam,” he shook him again. Sam’s eyes fluttered but did not stay open. And then he groaned. Again, the sound was soft and like a child. Cameron wanted to stop and carry him to the basement. But, he thought, “third times a charm.” Once more, he said, “Sam!”
Sophia awoke with a start. She was cold and felt so tired and shaky. She opened her eyes and recoiled. Cameron was right in front of her. His face was inches away. He seemed blurry, but it was him. Sophia let out a small squeak that sounded like an injured animal.
“It’s okay, Sam.” Cameron explained.
Sam. Sam. Who was Sam. She panicked. But then she remembered. It was Sam. It all came flooding back. Sophia had disguised herself as a boy to fool all men because one had tried to kill her. And now she was here with Cameron. But why did she feel so sick? She shivered.
“Sam. Your leg infection makes your whole body feel sick, and I need to give you an IV with antibiotics. I am going to carry you downstairs, okay?” He was talking very slowly and carefully.
What? Sophia could not understand. What was he saying? Carry her downstairs? What did that mean? And he could not carry her. What if he felt something wrong, something missing, or something else? She shivered again. “I walk.” She said, but it sounded more like a door hinge than a voice.
“No. No. You cannot do it. You cannot walk downstairs.” Cameron shook his head. He knew Sam could not do it. He could barely walk last night. The stairs were steep and narrow.
Sophia felt like she could not breathe. There was not enough air. She should try to escape out the front door. But Cameron needed to leave the room. An idea popped into her head. “water,” she gasped. “Water.”
This made sense to Cameron as a fever would cause dehydration. “Okay. I will get you some.” He stood and left the room.
