“I don’t want any trouble,” Stan announced. “Please, I don’t want to be arrested. I don’t want any cops.” He glanced back at Erik.
“Watch the road, please. You aren’t driving your vehicle. You are driving mine.” Erik replied.
Stan faced forward. “What do you want me to do, bro?”
“I want my car back and you out of our lives,” Erik replied. He was looking at the side of my face.
“If I stop the car, will you let me go without cops?” Stan asked.
Erik fell silent a moment and removed his right arm. I couldn’t see it, but later, he told me he had a smile. Because this whole conversation he had recorded. He had gotten in the car and hit record on his phone. But now he was dialing 911.
“Why would I call the cops?” He asked, As soon as the number was dialed and answered.
Stan glanced back at him. “Because, you know, I took your car without permission?”
“Oh, yeah. Watch the road!” He instructed. I could hear the smile and Erik’s voice by this point. But he kept talking. “You are still driving it, too, aren’t you?”
“Yes, but I would like to stop and give the wheel back to you, bro; I mean it. I’m not going to pull any funny business; I want to give you back your wheel. And I don’t want any cops.” Stan was talking with his right hand waving around.
“Well, maybe I don’t want to let you go and have you not suffer any consequences,” Erik announced.
“Please, bro.” Stan was whining now. “Hey, What is your name?” He asked.
“I’m Erik, and I already know your name. It’s Stan.” Erik replied.
“Erik, I’m sorry that I took your car. I honestly didn’t know Miranda had agreed to marry you. I would have never taken your car otherwise.” Stan was definitely panicking.
“Where are you going to pull over?” Erik asked. We were at the four way stop now at the bottom of the hill.
“ I don’t know, somewhere down the trail?” He explained and pointed.
“Why don’t you turn off at Pope Street and drive into a college parking lot so we can exchange the wheel properly.” Erik was speaking with a highly calm voice about the circumstances. But of course, he was speaking clearly so that the emergency operator could hear him.
