Lea wasn’t sure if she were surprised or not. She knew he cared about her for some reason. She didn’t understand why he bothered. Why did he desire to be near her, to understand her? Finally, she spoke. “When I am very lonely or feel that I can’t do anything right, or that I’m worthless, I hurt myself.” She took another breath and sighed. The tears were falling now.
“I want you to tell me; from now on, please tell me when you want to hurt yourself.” He touched her then, on the face. “I want to be there for you to show you that you are not alone, and you are perfect the way you are.” Darren wished to kiss away the tears.” I still want to know,” he added, “would you consider being my girlfriend?”
“But the scars and the self-harm, it doesn’t bother you?” She asked and looked away.
“They don’t change my feelings for you; I still want to be your boyfriend. When you go home, your going to need help. Your mom can’t help, can she? Not as much help as you will need.” Darren realized if she went back to her mom’s house, he couldn’t help her when she was lonely or unhappy. And he couldn’t help her physically, and she would need help; even if she could move, she couldn’t prepare her food and do laundry. And how would she accomplish all the other things life required. She had told him about her mom and how weak she was. Lea did all the lifting, carrying, laundry, cooking, and house cleaning since she was eight or nine. He wanted to take her home with him. He knew it was a huge step—a drastic change for her.
