“ But Zoe, I don’t want you to feel this way every time.” He whispered in her ear. “You will only panic again.”
“I heard knocking in the walls .” She explained that the tears had ceased, and she was gazing up at him, terrified. “I heard it come closer. I thought it was Calvin.
Victor was silent for a moment, trying to remember what could have explained such a noise. Suddenly he remembered. “Zoe, it was the maintenance man, he was mopping, and it was hitting the wall, making a clicking sound.” He gave her a squeeze. “You won’t hear it again. He will be on a different floor.
Zoe didn’t fully believe it. How could mopping make a tapping sound? But she shook her head slightly. “Okay.” She whispered. “Then I will be okay.” But she didn’t believe it even as she said it.
“Zoe, I saw two people when I went downstairs, the maintenance man and a neighbor in the laundry room. I know he will be gone and I bet she won’t be there any more.” He shrugged.
“She?” Zoe suddenly felt like crying again. “Did you sleep with her before?”
Victor pulled back with surprise. “No, no Zoe.”
“Did you try to pick her up?” Zoe was crying now.
Victor saw the tears. It suddenly dawned on him she more than liked him. She was getting jealous of other woman! And half of him felt warm and complete and the other half felt terrified. “I may have flirted with her, yes I did. I admit but nothing happened.” He said softly. He was regretting his lifestyle now. If only he could have had a half a dozen normal relationships she would have understood it more than picking up random woman every weekend. And really what kind of creep was he?
