The Doctor and the Lawyer

When her head finally lifted, it was almost dark. A few rays of twilight were still shining in the sky. But that wasn’t what her eyes became fixated on. Rather, Zoe could see a glimmer in the house just behind the curtains. It wasn’t the usual glow of the living room lights. No, this was an orange and yellow brightness, filtered through the sheer curtains and dancing.

She continued staring, confused and petrified. It couldn’t be, Zoe must be hallucinating things.  In addition, the stress and the weeping had confused her, causing her imagination to run wild. Still, Zoe rubbed both eyes and looked again. It was brighter now. She caught a glimpse, so bright it hurt her eyes. The light was licking at the curtains.

But as she continued monitoring, the curtain began to burn. It started from the small bottom corner and spread quickly. Soon the whole curtain had burned away in less than a minute. She realized something horrifying with a shock so strong it caused her heart to skip a beat and all breathing to cease. The house was on fire, burning away before her eyes.

Then, Zoe jumped out of the car and moved her joints and muscles. She made her hands find the phone, cheap and old, and the battery was almost dead. But she called nine one one and gave the address before it died. Then, Zoe went as close to the house as possible.

“Mom?” She screamed. “Mom!” Zoe couldn’t see clearly but her hands were outstretched and both eyes were filled with tears.

The fire was crackling and the pops and bangs of bottles and cans exploding inside filled the air. Zoe fell to a knee, with both hands over her head. Praying for the fire department to arrive on time, Zoe begged for help and rescue.

Abruptly Zoe heard a panicked cry and thought it was her mom’s voice, but would never know if it was for sure. But, at that moment, Zoe’s heart was in her throat. Her head lifted as Zoe screamed, ”Mom?!”
