Moment by Moment

“We better go. At least, you better go. Your mom is going to be back soon, and I don’t want you to get sick.” He gazed down at her, regretting each word spoken.

“When you say get sick, do you mean like catch a cold?” Katherine squinted up at him and smiled.

“It’s going to rain.” He replied, pulling away. Then, Justin released one of the hands and turned slightly.

Clutching at the hand, she unexpectedly felt dizzy and nauseous. The panic increased within Katherine, not wishing to leave so soon after just discovering him.

He turned around and held on tight. “You should be careful. You are weak. It’s not the best idea to skip meal after meal, one after another.”

“But I wasn’t hungry.” She protested.

“I know you weren’t,” Justin replied with a tone of sadness. He let go of Katherine’s hand, pulling her close, and wrapped an arm around her back. “I will walk back with you.” He replied so close to an ear.

At that moment, it began raining. Katherine got an overwhelming impression the place her body inhabited was a delusion. Everything surrounding her was a fantasy, none of it truly existed.

Taking a few steps with Justin by her side, but Katherine’s knees gave away. She didn’t faint, trip, or slip. But experiencing a combination of all three, she fell. Anxiety and concern caused Katherine to take the wrong step and lose her footing. Weakness caused her foot to drag and trip. The trees around her dimmed and receded. Justin, realizing what was about to happen, made a swift movement. Placing one of her arms around his neck, lifting as she went down, Justin carried Katherine out of the forest, down the hill, and across the small field to the house. Through the back door, he brought her, down the hall, and into the bedroom.
