Open the Door, Let the Sun In

Darren checked the bathroom, but it was over quickly. Next, he searched the bedroom to the left. Eventually, Darren found Lea cowering in the closet. He had almost overlooked her presence in the dark. But pale feet gave her away.

“Lea…” He spoke softly, pushing into the closet. “Why are you hiding?” He crouched and touched her face.

She was trembling and sobbing. The tears immediately started falling. Lea’s eyes were squeezed shut. She wasn’t ready to look at Darren’s brother and didn’t see Blake’s head pop into the closet as he attempted to see the girl in the dark.

Darren could hear her sobbing. He leaned closer, feeling around in the dim light. Finally, Darren got both arms around her and whispered, “don’t worry, Lea, he’s changed. Service has transformed him for the better. He won’t hurt you, he’s promised.”

It took ten minutes, but finally, Darren coaxed her out of the closet. Blake got bored and went downstairs to have more soda. Darren led Lea out of the darkness, whispering reassuring things continuously.

He lifted her out of the spare bedroom and onto their bed. He sat down and embraced her in a tight hug. “I promise you. Blake will not hurt you. Besides, he cannot say anything to me to make me leave.” He explained and held her silently till Blake called from the hall.

Lea had stopped crying but continued to tremble with fear. There was nothing Lea could do. In no way could she walk back to her mom’s house. Besides, her dog was here, and she could not walk him back alone. Moreover, she didn’t want to leave Darren. It was Blake she did not want to meet.

But, she knew Darren would force a meeting. She had heard him say that Blake had changed for the better. She did not believe it, not in the least. Even if it was, she was in no condition to check if it was true. The other man’s voice called in the hallway; Lea grabbed Darren’s arm.

Darren let her go when Blake called out. But Lea held onto him tightly. He gently disentangled the grip and mumbled, “it’s going to be ok. Nothing terrible is going to happen. I love you.” He kissed her, then went towards the bedroom door and opened it. “Blake, we’re in here.” He called.

Blake heard him, turned, and headed straight toward his brother’s room. On the bed sat the girl who used to live next door. He put on his sweetest smile. Lea wasn’t looking at him. She was looking at her hands, twisting them around and around. Lea was afraid, and this excited Blake. He strolled to stand directly before her.

“Hello there.” He announced, stretching out a hand. “I’m Blake.”
