“The Day the Skyfel: Ground zero”
“Let me get that.” He declared, pushing the door open, swiveling, and meeting her eye again.
Amanda returned his gaze but did not say anything and quickly walked towards the open door. But before she could pass through it, he put his arm out in front of her. “What is your name?” He inquired.
Amanda looked up at him in shock. He was not treating her like a household employee but more like a potential friend. It made her uncomfortable.
“Amanda,” she replied wide-eyed like a deer in headlights.
He smiled bigger. “Nice to meet you, Amanda. I am your boss, Leonard. But call me Leo.” He started to lower his arm and stick out his right hand forward like a handshake. But Mr. Turner paused and looked down at the dishes in her hand.
There was another shout from the hall. The door had never been closed, so the voice came clearly. “LEONARD.” Amanda jumped again. She glanced back behind her nervously, half expecting to see Mrs. Turner glaring at her.
Mr. Turner spoke in her ear. She swiveled to find him about twelve inches from her. “I’ve got to go. I’ll see you later, Amanda.” And he touched her on her left arm. Then he was gone racing towards the open door and his wife.

“Open the Door, Let the Sun In”
Lea wasn’t sure if she were surprised or not. She knew he cared about her for some reason. She didn’t understand why he bothered. Why did he desire to be near her, to understand her? Finally, she spoke. “When I am very lonely or feel that I can’t do anything right, or that I’m worthless, I hurt myself.” She took another breath and sighed. The tears were falling now.
“I want you to tell me; from now on, please tell me when you want to hurt yourself.” He touched her then, on the face. “I want to be there for you to show you that you are not alone, and you are perfect the way you are.” Darren wished to kiss away the tears.” I still want to know,” he added, “would you consider being my girlfriend?”
“But the scars and the self-harm, it doesn’t bother you?” She asked and looked away.
“They don’t change my feelings for you; I still want to be your boyfriend. When you go home, your going to need help. Your mom can’t help, can she? Not as much help as you will need.” Darren realized if she went back to her mom’s house, he couldn’t help her when she was lonely or unhappy. And he couldn’t help her physically, and she would need help; even if she could move, she couldn’t prepare her food and do laundry. And how would she accomplish all the other things life required. She had told him about her mom and how weak she was. Lea did all the lifting, carrying, laundry, cooking, and house cleaning since she was eight or nine. He wanted to take her home with him. He knew it was a huge step—a drastic change for her.

“Rightly Wrong or Wrongly Right”
Dean came back soon enough. Adara didn’t notice this trip took longer than the first. Dean handed her the drink in his left hand without saying a word.
She took it, declaring, “Thank you.” She noticed the ice floating in the coke. “Thank you!” She exclaimed a second time, pleased.
Dean smiled at her. But his smile wasn’t all happiness. If Adara had paid better attention, she would have noticed he lost a button while getting the drinks. “I’ll do anything for you, dear.” He responded.
She smiled back. Then she took a sip. It tasted so much better to her cold. The liquid reminded her she was getting hungry. Usually, she didn’t eat at parties as the food was often too fancy or exotic. She sighed.
“Are you okay?” Dean asked. He was watching her closely and saw her shift in mood.
“What kind of food are they serving?” Adara didn’t have much hope. But she felt hungry enough to ask the question.
“Food? Are you hungry?” Dean’s smile returned, and he seemed more relaxed. Adara nodded. He continued, “I think it was sushi, some other stuff that looked disgusting. Do you want me to get you something?” He was on the edge of his seat, ready to jump up if she asked.
“No, never mind. I hate the food here.” She replied, shaking her head a little.
Dean looked around then at the crowd. Then he leaned towards her and whispered, “I could take you somewhere.”
She looked at him blankly. “Where?”

Snippet Rightly Wrong or Wrongly Right
Adara watched from the inside through the tinted window. She felt so far away and disconnected, and she couldn’t hear any word. She leaned forward to look back towards the gate they had come through. On the other side, there was a parking lot where ordinary “less privileged” people would park to use the airport. Beyond the gate was the figure of a young man. He was standing there looking toward the private jet and the limo. Adara’s insides twisted. It was Dean.
“Adara! What’s wrong with you? Hurry up!” Dania was looking at her now, hand on hip. Adara’s concentration broke. She looked at her and blinked. “Come on, Adara!” Dania was approaching the car. Adara got out gradually, shutting the door behind her. She glanced at him again. He had to see her now. He had to be looking at her.
Dania was talking, talking. Adara didn’t hear her, but she felt her take her left arm. Dania was leading her towards the stairs to board the airplane. Adara wasn’t glancing at her or the plane. Instead, she was staring back to look at Dean. Her right arm was still across her stomach. It had never left. “Don’t go.” Her mind whispered, “Don’t let yourself go to Florida.” But she couldn’t run to him. They would all discern her. Abruptly she had an idea. But she had to hurry.
“Mother?” She spoke. Dania didn’t stop walking. Adara tugged at her left arm to stop her, and she wasn’t getting on the plane! “Mother!” She practically shouted. Dania looked at her, surprised. “I have to go to the bathroom. Now.” Adara explained.
“Adara. Can’t you wait till we are in the air? Just a couple of minutes and –” Dania began, still tugging her towards the plane.
Adara did something shocking then. She jerked her arm out of Dania’s grip and interrupted her. “Mother! I will urinate myself if you don’t let me go now!” Everyone heard this, but she didn’t care; she wasn’t getting on the plane. Dania stared at her in shock, having no response. Not only had she been interrupted, but Adara had mentioned urine in public.

The Day the Skyfel: Neighboring Strangers
On the coffee table sat a drawing of the cemetery. Ric turned a little to get a better view of it. It was an excellent drawing, like a photo but with more emotion, not happy emotion, but peace, silence, and loss. He glanced back at her face. She was still staring out the window. He knew now; she wasn’t looking at something in particular; she was focused on the graveyard. It was a place full of people who would never get up again, full of stillness, emptiness, and death.
He took a few steps till he was standing in front of the window to break the spell. Katana blinked. All she could see now was light and a silhouette of a person in front of it. She blinked again. Who was standing in front of the window? She struggled to focus on the shape. It was that guy, the neighbor guy who had been talking to her just a few minutes ago. Why was he here?
Ric saw her refocus her gaze on him. He saw her notice him. He took a few steps closer, hoping she could focus on his face and speak to him.
Katana managed to get the guys face into focus. She allowed herself to study his face. He was looking at her. He was flesh and blood standing in front of her blocking her view. Their eyes met, she blinked. He was the opposite of the cemetery. Those people had escaped life and were locked in space and time in death. Here was another living, breathing human, like herself.
For the first time since her parents had died, katana saw someone, really saw them. She had been living with her aunt, but it had been a coexistence, not a relationship. She hadn’t focused on her in years until last night. And that connection had hurt. But this was different. This was a guy. She never had in her life focused on a male member of the species since her father had died. And she could feel the man in the room with her now. She could see him breathing, and she sensed he was focused on her.
For a full minute they stared at each other hardly daring to blink. Finally he broke the silence. He stepped closer. And then he pointed to the drawing on the coffee table. “Did you draw that?“ He asked
Katana could see him more apparent now. She could see into his brown eyes. They made her feel strange like her exposed skin was tingling and warm. She glanced down to see what he was pointing to, then nodded.
