“You’ve got makeup on!” He said accusingly.
“So, I do.” She said, not looking at him.
“Is it for him? What are you trying to do to him?” He demanded.
“Mom put it on me,” she said defiantly, finally confronting him. “It wasn’t my idea.”
“Yeah, right.” He snorted. “You are turning into one of those girls, aren’t you?” He said it disgustedly.
She narrowed her eyes. “No, I am not. I told you mom put it on me.”
Mark rolled his eyes. “You’re doing it to get him to sleep with you, aren’t you?”
“No, I am not!” Katherine said, throwing the newspaper back on the coffee table.
“Now what?!” Their mom demanded, coming into the den with her hands on her hips.
“How can you let her dress like that?” Mark said, jumping up to face their mother. He was mad at her too.
“Katherine, you mean. Mark, she looks lovely!” Kaylyn sounded completely annoyed at her youngest child.
“You don’t get it, do you, mom? She is changed a lot in the last week. And it’s all that guy’s fault!” Mark said this very loudly.
“Justin?” Kaylyn was taken aback. “Mark, what is wrong with you? What are you implying?”
“Nothing.” Mark growled. He threw his arms up. “Absolutely nothing is wrong with me. Everyone in this house is just blind!!”
“Mark.” Kaylyn had moved her arms from her hips to in front of her, arms folded. She was tapping one finger of her right hand against her left arm. “I want you to stop this. Now.” She said this sternly in her no-nonsense mother voice. “You are overreacting.” She rolled her eyes. “I do not understand why you don’t like the idea of Katherine having a guy friend. It is crazy. I want you to be nice to him tonight. He said he would drive himself so we will be meeting him there. I want you to be pleasant to all of us, Kathy especially. Do you understand?” Mark grunted. “Are you listening to me, Mark?” Mark nodded. “Are you going to enjoy tonight?” He sighed and nodded again. “Now! I don’t want to hear another word about this tonight!”
