• The day the Skyfel: mountain recovery

“Okay,” He said at last. He nodded in the growing darkness. “I will take a nap.” He began to reach for his gun. “But you have to hold the gun.” She began to protest. But he put his hand on her right arm. “And as soon as that star, Venus actually, disappears.” He pointed. “I want you to wake me up.”

Shauna gazed upward, trying to follow his finger. Her mouth fell open. Gerald looked at her and could see her gazing up with her mouth gaped. His heart melted, he wanted to scoop her up and kiss her. His left hand ached to run along her back to her left shoulder and gently tug her back against himself.

Shauna sensed him looking at her. She looked at him. Instantly she felt her stomach twist. He was gazing at her in such an obvious observing way. But she told herself she didn’t know he liked her. She only thought he did because she wanted him to like her. She tried to talk over the embarrassment. “The blue star?” She asked, pointing.

Gerald was transfixed. He didn’t want to sleep. “Yes. The blue star.” He said but he wasn’t looking at the stars. He was looking at Shauna. He was pretty sure she was embarrassed by his gaze. And if she were embarrassed that meant she felt something when he was looking at her. He lowered his hand.

Shauna knew he was still looking at her. Finally she gave up and she faced him. “I am sorry.” She said.

Gerald wrinkled his brow. “For what?” he asked in surprise.

“I am sorry, I don’t know very much about science or practical things. I know it would be easier if I did.” she felt a sudden sting of tears.

Raven Was lost in a memory of a dream. In the dream she was in a puddle of blood. She Realized with the start that Josh wasn’t walking anymore. She looked up at him and found him gazing at her. He was smiling and the look was the look of love. She was surprised. He had been kind and concerned before. But now he looked as if he loved her.

“I’m Sorry”. She whispered. “ you can put me down now.”

“It’s okay.” He replied “you have my shirt again.”

She Look down at her hands and surprise. She had forgotten. She struggled to loosen them and found them stiff. “I am sorry.” She responded.

Josh’s lips were tingling. He wanted to kiss the nymph in the darkness. But he didn’t want to pressure her. He had told her he would give her years. And it had been less then a day. “Raven.” He breathed.

She looked up at him, feeling useless. “I’m sorry.” She added again.

“Don’t be sorry.” He whispered. “I care about you.” He had wanted to say love. But he didn’t want to make her feel like she owed him something.

She looked up at him, he looked very much like he cared about her. He looked like he wanted to kiss her. She had seen enough sad and depressing stories. Adam had looked a little like it too. But this went beyond just wanting to kiss her. Adam would have never carried her. Adam would have never helped her check for bleeding.

    “Josh?” She asked softly.

“yes?” he replied, and then he held his breathe.

“You can kiss me.” she turned her face up towards him and lifted her hand and place it against his heart.

  • Next Door

I know what I should have done at that moment. I should have canceled the date and spent the next few days trying to get a date out of Paul. But I didn’t. I had made an agreement with my mom and I have to do things for my mom or she makes me feel like a bad daughter. No matter what it is or how inconvenient or uncomfortable it is, if I don’t do as she wants I am a bad girl.

I continued to drink the water, wondering what I should do now. I remembered then I hadn’t taken his number. “you were going to give me your number.” I spoke up finally.

“Yes, of course.” He smiled and watched me open my phone.

“Ready.” I said, and he related the number, I made him check it, before I saved it.

“are you going to go through with it?” He asked, as I clicked my phone closed. “the thing your mom wants you to do?” He was watching me now.

I shrugged. Of course I was. But I felt wrong as if he was right, I shouldn’t. If it was upsetting me so much that I cry in front of a complete stranger, a cute guy no less, no matter how young, why the hell was I going through with it? “I don’t know.” I replied finally.

“you know, if you don’t stand up to her, she will always think she can boss you around.” He added, watching me closely. I wasn’t looking at him, I was looking at my hands.

I nodded. He was right. I would forever be twelve. But she was my only parent, even my grandparents were dead now. And my father and his family had never been in my life, and never would be. “you are right.” I said, picking at my nails.

“When is it supposed to happen?” He asked, but then added. “you don’t have to tell me, by the way, if I am being too nosy.”

I think he was, but my boundaries were way out of wack. My mom’s relationship had none, my ex had none. I didn’t even know what was proper anymore. “Saturday.” I responded. “at 6 pm.”

Paul turned a little to face me. “Will you text me when your home afterwards, just to let me know you made it and aren’t crying, or anxious. And if you are and think you could use some company, Let me know.”

I looked at him then. He was concerned for me. I could see it in his eyes. It hurt. I think my childhood was lonelier than most people have at least one good friend. I never had one. I had friends, but seeing someone once or twice a year doesn’t make them good friends. And since my 14th birthday I hadn’t talked to a soul.

But here was a complete stranger again showing me concern when my life had been completely void of it. What was I supposed to do? Finally I choked out. “okay. Thank you. I will.”

“So I am human.” She was disappointed. She loved him somehow. A deep aching longing that was growing stronger by the moment. But how could a God love a human?

“No, my love, You are my goddess. My Rajanani” the name sent shivers down her spine. It was like the feeling of desire, love, and home. His voice was a soft breeze floating through the air.

“That is my true name?” she gasped. She remembered now, writing the “RA J” on the wall.

“Yes my love.” He was touching her hair now. “You will slowly turn over the next few days. The humans will stop noticing you and your hair will turn to branches and leaves and your skin will thicken and your blood will thin and turn green.  And finally, on your 18th birthday you can return to me.  Then you will no longer be human. You will be as me..” His voice sounded like the puffy clouds moving overhead. .

Jinna  Closed her eyes and sighed. Goosebumps ran up and down her arm. She wondered. What would it feel like to be like him? Would she still feel the sensation she was feeling now? But right now felt so good. It felt like her destiny.

“My love” he Whispered into her ear. And then his hand touched her cheek. I’ve missed you so much. I lay dormant for several years. I couldn’t bear to live without you. It was only when You began to leave your house. When I could watch you from afar that I woke up and now In the last few years, as you approach the age I have been straying out of our forest to peek in at you at night.” His hand brushed her chin. “The Human custom of sleeping indoors is so strange. But you are so beautiful and I miss you so much. You are mine. We will soon be together. Oh Rajanani!” He said her name in a breathless whisper. His hand was leading his arm around her back now. He was pulling her closer to him. She opened her eyes. His smooth wooden face was so close. Her heart was pounding in her ears.
