“Tell me one thing truthfully. “Would you do that, Kathy?” He asked slowly. When Katherine didn’t reply, he continued, “Have you slept with this guy?”

“Who?” She asked with a great sigh, eyes on the front window.

“The guy you are going to see,” Mark replied eyes rolling, disgusted with the denial.

“How do you know I am going to see him?” Katherine demanded, eyes snapping back to Mark’s face.

“Well, at least you admit there is a guy,” Mark replied triumphantly.

“No.” Taking a deep breath, Katherine sighed as the words came out. “I haven’t.”

“No? I don’t believe you!!” Mark was practically shouting now.

“Why don’t you?” Katherine inquired, narrowing both eyes.

“You’re hiding something big, something huge.” Mark waved both arms, endeavoring to signify something significant.

“Go ahead and don’t believe what I say. I am telling the truth.” She insisted, angrily. Mark snorted but didn’t reply. “Look!” Katherine put a hand on the steering wheel. “I am going now,” Katherine declared and closed the door with a yank.

Mark had made a mistake and inadvertently lifted the hand off the door. Not paying attention had lost him the leverage to converse.

“Kathy, please.” She heard Mark say. But the engine turned and roared to life, and Katherine backed up as quickly as possible. Mark shouted something after her. When she glanced into the rearview mirror, Mark had swiveled back towards the front door.

But there was activity across the street from where her car had just been. A vehicle pulled out from the curb and followed her down the street. One of their neighbors had heard the argument. But it didn’t matter. Katherine didn’t have time to worry about these things.

She sighed and turned back to the road. “I need some peace. I am so tired of the noises.”

  • Rightly Wrong or Wrongly Right

On the one hand, going back to the party was the right thing for Adara. But it seemed wrong she couldn’t remember half of what had happened since she had left the party and she had lost her phone and cards. She didn’t recognize the man or recall him taking them. She didn’t recollect the blow. But Adara knew she had a massive bump on her head. Her family would ask questions she couldn’t answer.

On the other hand, if she stayed out all night, she’d have to go home eventually. So, staying out all night was the wrong decision. She would be in even bigger trouble if she did. But she could spend additional time with Dean if she didn’t go home. And staying with Dean felt right to her. And if she were lucky, she would remember everything before going home.

She looked at Dean. He was watching her and kept glancing at his watch. Finally, when he saw she was looking at him, he spoke. “We have to get going if you want to meet your chauffeur. We will be late as it is.” He didn’t want to take her back. She didn’t remember anything. Besides, the police officer and the medic entrusted him with her health and memory. If she remembered or had a symptom, it was up to him to call them or take her to the ER. He couldn’t help her if she were at home. But he couldn’t just ask her to come home with him, too much too soon. Besides, he and his cousin had argued at the party. He had a feeling he might bother him tonight. He’d already texted him ten times, wanting to know where he’d gone and if he’d taken “the rich girl” with him.

“I don’t want to go,” Adara announced, making her decision.

Dean blinked in surprise. “Are you sure?”

“I want to stay with you tonight. You at least know why I have a bump on my head. Didn’t that man say to watch me?” She was making excuses now. She knew it. Adara was trying to justify a few more hours with him any way she could.

“Okay. Then where do you want to go now?” He hadn’t seen this coming. He wasn’t sure if he should be excited or scared. What did it mean, taking Adara home with him? She was like a porcelain doll. Her skin was so pale. It was like she hadn’t walked in the sunlight. She always stayed inside, like a doll sitting behind the glass on a shelf. Did he trust himself not to break her? He wasn’t sure he did. Dean had already unintentionally put her life in danger. And now she couldn’t remember half of the night.

  • Day of Skyfel: Shadows of the Past

Reaching the top of the hill in time to see the sunset, Sophia stopped walking to enjoy it. It was beautiful, even though it was very similar to other sunsets she had observed. The sky turned golden and red before the color faded into purple and blue. It hurt her somehow, deep inside below the physical pain and exhaustion.

How was it possible to enjoy this sunset when so many others couldn’t see it. The situation wasn’t fair. Sophia shouldn’t be enjoying it but lying dead somewhere like the man.

By all rights, she should be dead. “He is dead and gone, lady, he is dead and gone…” The mocking words seem to come to her. Trembling while attempting to hold back the tears from rolling down her cheek, Sophia turned away and headed down the hill, stumbling into twilight and the darkness.

The night stretched into infinity. Sophia existed in limbo, sometimes walking, sometimes resting. The night moved on but in her mind, time stood still. She moved slowly, drifting westward. The stars stared down at her, sharp points of light, uncaring and cruel, offering no comfort.

The moon appeared late at night, an unfamiliar waning moon. She rarely saw this side of the moon. Even it seemed sinister to her as if she had somehow fallen into the opposite world where everything was evil.

Dawn arrived, and a faint glow on the eastern horizon spread slowly. Sophia enjoyed the sunrise while resting, sitting on a hill facing east, and watching the light spreading all around her. When the light started hurting her eyes, she found the sunglasses again and put them on, then laid down on her side and closed both eyes.

Time passed, and she slept but woke to another brilliant warm day. She drank some more water and ate some of the tasteless food. Once again, a nightmare march had begun. Hours passed, and silence reigned. Sophia rested before walking again till she stumbled. Her mind was a complete blank and she felt nothing except the pain, not thinking about anything but the urge to keep walking.

  • Extended Stay WIP

The following is almost completely a true story. Trigger warning.

“You are a filthy whore” he said, shaking my arm. I was trying to drive. I rolled my eyes It would serve him right if I got in an accident.. The light in front of me was turning red and I slowed.

Having stopped, I turned to him and said. “You are a an asshole.”

His face got this shocked look on it and he said, “Oh oh, the whore speaks.” He spat on me then.

I had it by then. I Knew there was no way I could win with words because he always had the faster mouth. picked up the chilled coffee cup in between the seats and I Opened it and threw it in his lap.

He froze a moment. And then he took his hand and backhanded me right across the face, breaking my nose and tearing my eyes. “You bitch you fucking bitch” he was screaming at me, examining his pants.

Luca began to scream in the backseat. He was miserable and sick of screaming. I touched my nose because it hurt and I pulled my hand away and found blood dripping out. I looked in the mirror and there was blood everywhere.

“Fuck!” Gavin had finally noticed what he had done. “Fuck! I didn’t mean to, fuck!”

His hand was on my face probably trying to hide what he had done. I pushed it away and snapped,  “don’t touch me!”

But Gavin had noticed something else. “Fuck, turn, go back to Fairfield quick!”

“No, you are going to work, I don’t want to see you for the rest of the day.” I rose my voice the light had changed and I began to push to gas.”

“No, Hanna, turn, turn.” I glanced at him he was absolutely panicked. What was wrong with him?

“Why should I?” I asked. But it wasn’t a bad idea to pull over I needs to take care of my nose and I needed to take care of Luca.

“Those people!” He gasped, he put a tissue on my nose then I assumed to cover the evidence.

I jerked away and looked around. There was a car driving parallel to us with a young couple looking straight at us and waving there arms and pointing. I assumed they had seen us. I relaxed. Well this was something good. Not that I wanted him arrested at the moment. I wanted to leave him and I didn’t want the dog or to do anything with his crap but maybe an overnight stay wouldn’t be a bad idea.

  • Open the Door, Let the Sun In

Darren checked the bathroom, but it was over quickly. Next, he searched the bedroom to the left. Eventually, Darren found Lea cowering in the closet. He had almost overlooked her presence in the dark. But pale feet gave her away.

“Lea…” He spoke softly, pushing into the closet. “Why are you hiding?” He crouched and touched her face.

She was trembling and sobbing. The tears immediately started falling. Lea’s eyes were squeezed shut. She wasn’t ready to look at Darren’s brother and didn’t see Blake’s head pop into the closet as he attempted to see the girl in the dark.

Darren could hear her sobbing. He leaned closer, feeling around in the dim light. Finally, Darren got both arms around her and whispered, “don’t worry, Lea, he’s changed. Service has transformed him for the better. He won’t hurt you, he’s promised.”

It took ten minutes, but finally, Darren coaxed her out of the closet. Blake got bored and went downstairs to have more soda. Darren led Lea out of the darkness, whispering reassuring things continuously.

He lifted her out of the spare bedroom and onto their bed. He sat down and embraced her in a tight hug. “I promise you. Blake will not hurt you. Besides, he cannot say anything to me to make me leave.” He explained and held her silently till Blake called from the hall.

Lea had stopped crying but continued to tremble with fear. There was nothing Lea could do. In no way could she walk back to her mom’s house. Besides, her dog was here, and she could not walk him back alone. Moreover, she didn’t want to leave Darren. It was Blake she did not want to meet.

But, she knew Darren would force a meeting. She had heard him say that Blake had changed for the better. She did not believe it, not in the least. Even if it was, she was in no condition to check if it was true. The other man’s voice called in the hallway; Lea grabbed Darren’s arm.

Darren let her go when Blake called out. But Lea held onto him tightly. He gently disentangled the grip and mumbled, “it’s going to be ok. Nothing terrible is going to happen. I love you.” He kissed her, then went towards the bedroom door and opened it. “Blake, we’re in here.” He called.

Blake heard him, turned, and headed straight toward his brother’s room. On the bed sat the girl who used to live next door. He put on his sweetest smile. Lea wasn’t looking at him. She was looking at her hands, twisting them around and around. Lea was afraid, and this excited Blake. He strolled to stand directly before her.

“Hello there.” He announced, stretching out a hand. “I’m Blake.”

“We better go. At least, you better go. Your mom is going to be back soon, and I don’t want you to get sick.” He gazed down at her, regretting each word spoken.

“When you say get sick, do you mean like catch a cold?” Katherine squinted up at him and smiled.

“It’s going to rain.” He replied, pulling away. Then, Justin released one of the hands and turned slightly.

Clutching at the hand, she unexpectedly felt dizzy and nauseous. The panic increased within Katherine, not wishing to leave so soon after just discovering him.

He turned around and held on tight. “You should be careful. You are weak. It’s not the best idea to skip meal after meal, one after another.”

“But I wasn’t hungry.” She protested.

“I know you weren’t,” Justin replied with a tone of sadness. He let go of Katherine’s hand, pulling her close, and wrapped an arm around her back. “I will walk back with you.” He replied so close to an ear.

At that moment, it began raining. Katherine got an overwhelming impression the place her body inhabited was a delusion. Everything surrounding her was a fantasy, none of it truly existed.

Taking a few steps with Justin by her side, but Katherine’s knees gave away. She didn’t faint, trip, or slip. But experiencing a combination of all three, she fell. Anxiety and concern caused Katherine to take the wrong step and lose her footing. Weakness caused her foot to drag and trip. The trees around her dimmed and receded. Justin, realizing what was about to happen, made a swift movement. Placing one of her arms around his neck, lifting as she went down, Justin carried Katherine out of the forest, down the hill, and across the small field to the house. Through the back door, he brought her, down the hall, and into the bedroom.

  • The Day of Skyfel

Suddenly, an idea popped into his head. He knew there was only one chance to fire the weapon and Madeline was too far away to be confident about striking her on the first shot.  So, Leo opened his mouth and spoke.

“Hey, Madeline, can I ask you something? ” He had spotted some papers lying on the counter and had an idea. He hid the weapon in a fist.

Madeline looked at Leo.  “What is your question? ” She asked while scowling.

“I wanted to know if you could forge a signature. I needed Julianne’s signature. ” He sighed despondently.

Madeline stood, adjusting her outfit. “What are you talking about, human male? Stupid man, men are such idiots, no matter the planet. But human males have to be the most ridiculous. “

“Can I show you? ” He replied, letting go of Ana’s hand and pointing. “The papers are right over there. It will take just a second. “

Madeline glanced in the direction he pointed and sighed. “Okay. I will take a look. But only because I need to walk to that side of the room to watch the security tapes. ” She began navigating around the puddle.

“Can I step over there with you? ” Leo asked. “You told me not to move an inch. I don’t want to upset you. ” Leo added when Madeline’s flashing eyes fell on him.

Madeline had moved past the liquid. She glanced at Leo again. “Okay, hurry up and show me the papers. ” She instructed, waving a hand.

Leo hoped the weapon was pointing the right way. Madeline waited for Leo to approach and motioned again in the indicated direction. He paused a foot away facing her.

“Madeline, I am so sorry about Julianne—” he began. But Leo did not say anything else only lifted his hand slightly, moved a few fingers, and pressed the tiny bumps at the side of the weapon. Leo’s hand was less than six inches away from Madeline’s body.
