    “Katana!” Her aunt bellowed.

Katana stopped in the doorway. She turned slowly to look at her aunt. Her aunt was on her feet, arms crossed. She didn’t say anything. There was nothing to say. Her aunt was the one that had called her.

“Katana, I have just about had it. You come in here, I make the food I set the table and you don’t lift a finger to help me. What have I been raising you for? Am I just supposed to do everything for you till you die? I am going to die first. What are you going to do then, hu? Just sit around and paint that God damn cemetery until you die of hunger in a pile of crap? I mean you don’t cook, you don’t clean, you don’t eat, I am surprised you know how to change your clothes and take a bath. My God.” she threw her hands up. And then pointed a finger at Katana. “You come over here.” She pointed to the sink. “You wash the dishes, all of them, the ones I used to cook and ate off of too.”

Katana’s eyes had been getting wider and wider as her aunt talked. She could feel tears now, she never cried. She hadn’t even cried when her parents had died. But she could feel them now, they wanted to pour down her face. Katana felt sick. She felt as if she could throw up. But she didn’t. She moved to the sink and turned on the water and began to scrub.

Aunt Eloise watched her for a moment then she turned, stuffed the food into her mouth and snatched up the dishes off the table. She marched to the sink, threw the dishes into the water with a plop, causing Katana to jump. Her aunt swiveled on her heel and went back to the table and washed it up. She found a few things to put away. She was ready for Katana by the time she finished with the dishes.

As soon as Katana was finished with the dishes she turned towards the door to the living room. But her aunt was there in the way. She was glaring at her again. Katana stared at her saying nothing. She felt as if she couldn’t move.

Her aunt pointed in the direction of the cemetery and began. “I don’t want to ever come home and find you painting that cemetery again, do you understand? I don’t want you looking at it. I don’t want to see any more pictures or painting laying around. I have had it with that cemetery, or I swear to God, I will rip up the next drawing of it I find!” Aunt Eloise crossed her arms and waited for a reply.

Victor noticed Zoe’s facial expressions changing from confusion to panic. Victor followed her gaze and found himself staring at a smiling image of Zoe, seemingly younger, onscreen. Victor grabbed the remote and hit the button to boost the volume.

“According to the Alameda County Police Department, Martin was last seen leaving a house on the 5700 block of West Creek Road. Officials state that Martin suffers from schizophrenia and doesn’t have her medication. She may be paranoid and will tell an incredibly detailed story. If you have any information about her whereabouts, please get in touch with the Alameda sheriff’s office at —” Victor muted the sound. He didn’t believe the news, or relatively confident he didn’t. But when it came down to it, Victor was not assured. He glanced at Zoe.

Zoe had begun to cry. Tears were rolling down her cheeks. Quite sure Victor would want to call the police, Zoe didn’t know what to say to convince him. That wasn’t what had happened, but could she speak long enough to explain? If not, Victor would have no option but to believe what the authorities had stated. She didn’t want to even look at him and was trembling.

Zoe could feel Victor’s eyes examining her. Finally, she turned toward him but gazed at his lap. She didn’t dare meet his eyes, terrified of what emotions might be in them.

”I am sorry.” She sobbed. ”If you want me to leave tell me,”  Zoe gasped. ”If you want to call the police, I won’t run.”  Then, she turned from him and buried her face into the arm of the couch.

Zoe’s crying caused pain in the center of Victor’s chest. He felt sick. Then when she turned around and apologized, he felt upset. How dare he question whether Zoe had told the complete truth. Finally, when she explained he could call the authorities, Victor became convinced Zoe was in more trouble than he had originally assumed.

Victor sighed, turned off the tv, and moved closer. He observed Zoe’s shoulders shaking before eventually reaching out to brush one.

Zoe cried her heart out as there was no way to escape now. Victor shouldn’t believe or help her now. He had no reason not to call the department. Without an explanation from her, it was the only choice remaining.

She jumped as he touched her, clutching a hand to her chest. Looking up at him in panic, Zoe was wide-eyed and panting.

When her head finally lifted, it was almost dark. A few rays of twilight were still shining in the sky. But that wasn’t what her eyes became fixated on. Rather, Zoe could see a glimmer in the house just behind the curtains. It wasn’t the usual glow of the living room lights. No, this was an orange and yellow brightness, filtered through the sheer curtains and dancing.

She continued staring, confused and petrified. It couldn’t be, Zoe must be hallucinating things.  In addition, the stress and the weeping had confused her, causing her imagination to run wild. Still, Zoe rubbed both eyes and looked again. It was brighter now. She caught a glimpse, so bright it hurt her eyes. The light was licking at the curtains.

But as she continued monitoring, the curtain began to burn. It started from the small bottom corner and spread quickly. Soon the whole curtain had burned away in less than a minute. She realized something horrifying with a shock so strong it caused her heart to skip a beat and all breathing to cease. The house was on fire, burning away before her eyes.

Then, Zoe jumped out of the car and moved her joints and muscles. She made her hands find the phone, cheap and old, and the battery was almost dead. But she called nine one one and gave the address before it died. Then, Zoe went as close to the house as possible.

“Mom?” She screamed. “Mom!” Zoe couldn’t see clearly but her hands were outstretched and both eyes were filled with tears.

The fire was crackling and the pops and bangs of bottles and cans exploding inside filled the air. Zoe fell to a knee, with both hands over her head. Praying for the fire department to arrive on time, Zoe begged for help and rescue.

Abruptly Zoe heard a panicked cry and thought it was her mom’s voice, but would never know if it was for sure. But, at that moment, Zoe’s heart was in her throat. Her head lifted as Zoe screamed, ”Mom?!”

But Ana was slowly slipping. The woman had ahold of her right ankle. It burned and felt as though someone was being yanked off her body, tearing flesh and bone. Ana was gritting her teeth and holding on with every ounce of strength she had, but the woman was also yanking with all the force and weight she possessed.

“Ana, ” Leo whispered, searching her face. Something was wrong; he felt certain something had happened to the lower half of her body. Ana was frozen, her jaw worked, and an expression of pain was on her face.

Ana glanced into Leo’s eyes. Her eyes were welling up with tears and Leo could see the panic Ana felt.

“Someone has my foot. ” She gasped and squeezed his hand.  “I’m being pulled off the rock—can’t hold on anymore. ” She was crying, every muscle burning. “Leo, you have to let me go. There is no point in both of us dying. “

“Ana, don’t talk like this. Ana! Try to kick the person off with your other foot. Can’t you try? Please, darling, please, I won’t let go. ” Leo searched around for another anchor to brace his body against while still holding tightly. But he was unable to find something and the hold Leo had was slipping despite best efforts as the weight of two people at the same time strained every muscle.

“I can’t move my lower half. ” She gasped. “Every time I attempt to move, pain shoots through my back. ” The panic in her eyes had now transformed into sheer terror and horror.

Leo wanted to hold her close but was unable to lift three hundred pounds of weight.  If Ana was incapable of walking, Leo would carry her. But, how would he lift her off the rock wall?

“Ana, I love you. Please keep on holding onto me, don’t let go. ” Leo begged.

Hearing his words, Ana stared at the hand Leo held. Do not let go. Let go. If Ana let go, she would fall, and Leo would be safe. He would survive. She relaxed the muscles a little but did not want Leo to notice. Slowly, the hand began to slip out of his grasp. Resting completely, Ana glanced back into Leo’s eyes.

“We aren’t going to make it across before the self-destruct explodes. ” Leo glanced over at her. “I would hope we are far enough away, but what if the shock wave hits the bridge? “

Ana was crying silently for the death of millions of people. But she focused on Leo.

“What should we do? ” She asked him, eyes wide.

“Let’s get out and walk. The traffic is moving too slowly. I can walk faster than this. You can walk, right? Or am I going to have to carry you? ” Leo asked and suddenly grabbed her hand and kissed it.

“Leo, I will walk. If it’s life or death, I’ll run. ” Ana squeezed his hand.

“Okay. I am coming around. I want to hold hands with you. ” Leo smiled.

She nodded and gasped out, “me too. “

Leo turned the engine off and parked the car in the middle of the road. He got out and ran around, helping her stand. They kissed each other quickly and then began to walk as fast as they could toward the Marin headlands. He did not even look back at the Tesla with regret. Few other people were walking, but enough to prevent them from running.

“Let’s go towards the Marin headlands. It is away from the direct line of sight of San Francisco’s skyline. ” Leo explained, panting between breaths and pointing to the left side of the road as they neared the end of the bridge.

“Okay, ” Ana agreed, having trouble stopping herself from screaming at the others surrounding them, begging the populous to run for their lives.

  • Open the Door, Let the Sun In

He didn’t pull away once the phone was passed over but asked, “Lea, can you show me what happened to your hand?”

She shook, holding out the left hand and placing it in Darren’s, glancing from him towards the front door and back again.

“Don’t worry. He’s out cold.” Darren whispered, meeting her eyes and then examining the hand. Darren found Lea had suffered severe burns on the thumb, pointer finger, part of the middle finger, and palm. Darren kissed an uninjured portion and considered a plan.

“He won’t be awake for a long time. I’d get you some clothes, but he is right in the doorway. So I am not in favor of risking it. Your hand needs urgent medical treatment. Blake would most likely check your mom’s house first and then your workplace. I am guessing you wanted your phone so you could call and warn her about him?”

Lea nodded, still struggling with words.

Darren continued and asked. “That reminds me. Where is Monty?” Thinking about the dog that they had brought the first day home from the hospital.

Hearing Monty’s name brought tears to Lea’s eyes.  “He – he died.”

“What did Blake do to him?” Darren was alert again.

“I – Monty’s lung collapsed. I don’t know if Blake did anything to him. He was barking at a dog. Blake kicked him.” Lea explained, crying.
