“Moment by Moment”
Justin focused his mind. He closed his eyes and shut out Mrs. McQueen. He shut out Katherine and her mother. He shut out everything and focused on Snookie. In his mind he saw him. He stood in the dark covered in cobwebs. There was dirt caked under his paws, and he looked terrified. Justin smiled. He opened his eyes.
“Do you have a flashlight Mrs. McQueen?” He knew she did. Mrs. McQueen had a lot of first aid and survival equipment.
“Of course, just a minute.” Mrs. McQueen turn and ran into the house.
Justin closed his eyes again. Where under this big house was Snookie? He found him again and this time looked around Snookie and his mind’s eye trying to find a distinguishing feature in the dark.” He saw pipes, tubes, holes, and cracks. He saw one crack. It opened to the outside; bright sunlight was streaming in. A little patch of sunlight was falling across Snookie’s tail. Justin Walked around the house, slowly studying the wall within a foot of the ground. Finally on the north side (near the back of the house) he found the crack. He closed his eyes. Snookie was still there. He was now looking towards the hole. His tail was thumping in frustration.
Justin headed back towards the front of the house. Mrs. McQueen was just coming out the front door calling, “got it.” But Justin put his fingers to his lips. He beckoned to her, and she came.
“I found him.” He said softly.
“Where?” She asked, eyes opened wide.
“Back here. But there is no opening. How can I get under there?” He asked, pointing to the wall where Snookie was hiding. A car passed by on the road. Justin ignored it.Urban fantasy

“The Day the Skyfel: Ground Zero”
As they maneuvered the streets of San Francisco, Ana had a strange feeling that she was in a time capsule. The bomb destroyed the city in her vision. This city around her now was a memory, an echo of the past. The people were dead and disintegrated and the buildings crumbled to dust. They were not here anymore. It was a recording. She stared out of the passenger window, her face blank, and her mind numbed.
At some point, the tears began. They dripped out of Ana’s eyes, down her face, and off her chin. She continued to stare and cry till they were on the bridge and driving into Marin. At this point, she shut her eyes. She had seen enough. She tried to stop crying. But now, she could see the faces in her mind, haunting her like the ghosts they would be in three weeks.
Everyone could not survive, but why couldn’t they? Her mind was arguing with itself. They could not survive; they would die so others could live. If they all knew, then the Skycendelvin’s would move up their skyfel date, and everyone would die. That was the explanation given to her by Mr. Abbott. She understood it. And it was true. But why did people have to die? She sobbed then.
Leo had driven in silence. He was still thinking about his shelter project. Leo was going over everything in his mind. Was there anything he had forgotten? Medical supplies were definite. And personal self-care items, mainly for Ana. Leo would also need a few. But eventually, he heard a sob.
They had passed through San Rafael and approached Novato. He heard a sob, an exceptionally soft wail. He knew it was Ana and not something wrong with the car. He looked toward her, but she was not looking at him. She had turned her body towards the window.
“Ana?” he asked.
Ana heard Leo. She wanted to answer him. But Ana was unable to. She knew that she would break down if she did. She shook her head, keeping her eyes closed.
Leo saw the tail end of the head shake. He deduced it meant she still was not ready to talk about it. Leo kept going. He passed Novato. Leo heard another sob. He glanced again. Ana faced forward now, but he could see her eyes were closed.Available now!!

“Open the Door, Let the Sun In”
Lea looked around the room, wondering what he meant. But then she looked out of the window and gave a tiny gasp. “you can see the whole house and driveway from here.” She gawked.
“Yep.” Darren was blushing. “Does that bother you?”
“No, but I didn’t know; I never noticed this house from my house. How can you see it so well?”
Darren shrugged. “I don’t know. But it is one of only two windows you can see it from so well. The other window is next door in the bathroom.” He nodded to the left, “except in the winter when the leaves fall, then you can see it from almost this entire side of the house.
“You spent a lot of time watching out for me, didn’t you?” Lea gazed at Darren.
“I’m sorry.” Darren glanced at her sheepishly.
“I am not mad, I promise. I think you must have been bored. I’m not intriguing.” She shrugged.
“To me, you are.” Darren still gazed at her.
“You couldn’t see in any of the windows, could you?” Lea took another look out of the window, narrowing her eyes.
“No, sweetheart. I promise.” Darren asserted.
“I’m teasing you. My mom keeps the windows and curtains closed.” She rolled her eyes. Here is another peek. Available now!

“Rightly Wrong or Wrongly Right”
Adara reached the front door and tried to turn the doorknob. But Marshall had locked the bolt. For an extended moment, Adara stood shivering, her teeth chattering. First, she would have to ring the doorbell. Adara didn’t have a key. Then they would all know she had returned. They would descend on her like a whirlwind. She wouldn’t be able to explain anything to them for the simple fact she didn’t remember anything. Her family would want to know what had transpired, why she hadn’t returned home when she was supposed to. She didn’t wish to go inside and confront them. Adara yearned to turn her body around and run away, down the driveway, out onto the street. But where would she go?
She glanced back towards the road then. She could see the garbage truck had moved on. The sky was getting brighter every second that passed. It was after dawn. Where had she been for the hours she could not remember? Had she stayed with the man who had spoken to her? He had been sweet. Adara could see him in her mind, his face vaguely outlined by darkness.
She turned back to the doors once more and reached her hand out towards the doorbell. She stood frozen there for a long minute. Then, finally, she stopped shivering and breathing. Adara caught a glimpse of his face and heard his voice in her ear, “I’d do anything for you, dear.” He had called her dear. He said he would do anything; why? She didn’t understand. The words echoed in her mind. She could still hear them repeating in her ears.
A violent shake passed through her body, and she closed her eyes and hugged herself again. After a moment of self-composure, in which she forced herself to take several deep breaths, she opened her eyes and stretched out her hand again. Finally, she rang the doorbell. She kept her mind blank. She would not speculate about or dwell on the past. She would go inside and return to her old life and whatever was left for her there.Available now:

On the Hill
“You are sweet,” I whispered.
“Are you going to let me take you inside now?” he asked softly. He had both of my hands again.
“Yes.” I pulled my head into an upright position. “I am ready.” He insisted on having me wait while he ran around, opened my door and took my hand in one of his, and wrapped his other hand and arm around my back. I was sick to my stomach with worry. What would they do? Would Stan find out I was here?
“You know,” I whispered while we walked towards the entrance. “He threatened to kill me if I reported it and anyone who helped me.” I was having trouble getting one foot in front of another.
“I’m not scared of him,” Erik said softly. “Besides. I’m a black belt.” He squeezed my left hand and pulled me tighter against his side.
“As long as you are prepared. He told me these things before I got away from him. I haven’t looked at what he has texted me.” We had almost made it; I was staring down at my feet.
“You can show it to the police.” Erik replied, rubbing my back.
I glanced up at him, blushing. “I wasn’t going to report it.” I whispered. I looked away.
Erik was shocked. “Miranda, you need to report it! He’s a danger to society. He will do it again. He needs to be off the streets.”Now available

“Moment by Moment”
Katherine jumped when a familiar voice interrupted her contemplation. “Hello, Katherine.” Her stomach fluttered. She looked up. Justin was there, and he had pushed his baseball cap up. She could see his face now. She didn’t respond for a lengthy moment. He was smiling at her. The smile informed her that he understood that she had figured it out.
She relaxed a bit and returned his smile. “Hello, Neighbor.” She put the book back, keeping her hand and gaze on it for a long moment. Then she swiveled back to him. She asked him in a voice half accusing and half-joking. “Where did you go this morning at 8 am?”
He didn’t answer. He looked away from her to look at the book she still had her hand on. “You should read it. It’s an enjoyable book.”
“You didn’t answer my question.” She said putting her hand on her hip.
He smirked at her. “How do you know that was me?”
She answered the question with a question. “How do you know that I’d like this book, Justin Wade?”
“I would have guessed that you would have had it all worked out by now. You’re on the right path.”
She crossed her arms. “You’re saying that you’re a mind reader?” He just smiled at her, saying nothing.
At that moment, she heard her mom’s voice coming from the aisle behind her. “Kathy?” She was calling. “Oh, there you are!” She had spotted her. Katherine turned. Her mom had just come around the corner. She stopped when she saw Justin. “Hello there.” She said, greeting him pleasantly.
“Hello, Mrs. Grant.” Justin said. “How are you?”
“I’m doing fine.” She paused and then continued. “You’re Justin, aren’t you? You live across the street from us, don’t you?”
“Yes, I do.” He smiled at her, completely at ease.
“Do you and Kathy know each other?” Her mom asked, looking from Katherine to Justin. Katherine turned from her mom to see Justin’s reaction to this question.
He took it in stride. He looked at Katherine and answered. “Yes, we do.” She could see the amusement in his eyes. -
