• “On the hill”

I watched him pour the water and turn back to me. He walked over to me, smiling and bent down, kissing me on the lips. I stood on tip toes, wrapped my right arm around his neck and opened my mouth. He wrapped his arms around me.
For an explained reason, I felt tears suddenly threatening to come out. Maybe it was relief from the years of loneliness. Perhaps it was sadness for the wasted years. Or maybe it was the fact that after twenty-six years, I would finally spend a night with someone other than where my mom was. I fought them as his tongue pushed against mine, but I couldn’t hide the sob that escaped my throat.
He pulled away and asked, “what’s wrong, sweetheart?” so gently it felt I couldn’t look him in the eye as he didn’t deserve my crying. I buried my face in his shirt and the tears poured out of my eyes. He didn’t ask again; Instead, he pulled me tight and sat his chin on my head, and held me there while the tub filled, and I had a good cry on his shirt.
Eventually, I pulled back and looked up at him, still crying but not sobbing. I whispered, “I’m sorry. You’ve been so sweet. I’m sorry.”
He wiped a few tears and said softly. “It is okay, Miranda. You went through hell today. And we finally spoke after ten years; your brain and body are all a jumble.” he wiped more tears. “It is okay to cry; I will hold you when you need to be held.”
I didn’t deserve him, Honestly. But for some reason, he loved me. “Thank you.” I whispered. But then as I watched him pulled back and turned off the tub and I remembered he would have to help me with my shirt.

  • Hopelessness

  • “Moment by Moment”

But while trying to soften the landing, she didn’t realize she would land on her left foot first at the wrong angle. The crash came with an echo. Everyone in the gym heard it and stopped, trying to figure out what had happened. Katherine herself had felt and listened to the crack when her foot hit the floor. She knew it was broken without being told.
It startled her, and she put her head down before coming to a stop to try to see. She hit her head hard on the base of the bleachers. She lay there stunned for a second. The lights in the room around her were flickering. At least they were for her. It went in surges, bright, dim, bright, dim. She could hear her heartbeat in her ears. It seemed like the room had gone silent, except for the sound of her heart.
She was the center of attention. The only two people who were trying to move away were Heidi and Brenda. Everyone else was moving closer. “Who is it?” “It’s Kathy.” Were said over and over. “Is she okay?” “I don’t know.” “She isn’t moving!” “Was she knocked out?”
Finally, her brother was beside her. Katherine saw a head come slowly into her vision. It was blocking the lights. Who was it? She could not focus. Was it Justin? Justin! She should have listened to him. She should have gone with him.
“Kathy? Kathy! Can you hear me? Can you move?” Mark was trying to get a response. But she was not listening or could not hear him. He was checking all her arms and legs. He was confident, from the position of her left foot, that it was broken.
A voice boomed above his voice. “Stand back! Give her room!!” It was Mr. Mac. He was a drill sergeant. But when someone was hurt, he took it seriously. And this girl was not faking. He always could tell the difference.

  • “The Day the Skyfel: Ground Zero”

He had made it sound like they were on top of it. When it came to restoring the electricity and other utilities, they were not. There were miles and miles of wires and equipment, and they had only approached a few people because of the fear that the individuals would turn and tell others. The possibility that only one would show up, or maybe none of the recruits would make it to the shelters, and the covers were not well protected. It was a lost cause. There was a possibility the Skycendelvins would come back within a few years and wipe everyone off the face of the earth. He had a headache. He took off his glasses again and rubbed his eyes.
He took a deep breath and held it. He realized then that Leo was watching him, slowly caressing Ana’s head in soft circles. His cheek rested on her head. He did deserve her; Leo was caring and attentive. More than he ever could be.
Mr. Abbott let the air out and cleared his throat. “I need to explain the mission, and you guys are under no obligation to carry it out. It is already a death run. But,” he switched papers around again. “If you guys decide to help us, the mission is to locate the portal. You are both strongly associated with the host and scout, as I said. If anyone could find the portal without getting killed, you two would be.” He turned to Leo. “For example, you are divorcing her; you could use the excuse of paperwork she did not fill out correctly; I know I said don’t go back to the house. That only applies if you are walking away. But if you take the mission, ignore that warning.”
He sighed and pointed at one of the papers. “Here is the area we narrowed it down to before—” he trailed off. “We are 99% sure it is here. If we cannot find it, we will set off a nuke of our own on the date and time; roughly 10:50 am. The moment is a worldwide agreed-upon set time. It is a different hour based on the timezone. The only problem with using our weapons is that we do not know the construction of the building the portal sits in unless we find it. It may be underground. In which case, the nuke may not be powerful enough to destroy it. It is a gamble.

  • Want out

  • “Open the Door, Let the Sun In”

“Yes? What is the matter?” He leaned closer. Darren’s right hand came off her arm and brushed a hair out of her eyes.
“I want a hug.” She murmured, still whispering
Darren’s voice got serious. “You want me to hug you?” He asked.
“I want to sit up; I want to get myself up. but I don’t know if I can.” She confessed. She felt nervous doing the exercises the physical therapist had shown her. She was afraid it would damage her ribs. Though the therapist promised they wouldn’t.
“So you don’t want me to pull you up. Can I help you?” Darren let go of Lea’s hand and put his arm out, palm open. “If you clutch my arm, you could try to pull yourself up into a sitting position.”
“Okay. But let me try. Don’t just pull me up, promise?” She instructed. He nodded, and Lea clasped Darren’s wrist with her left hand. She wasn’t sure she could hold him with her right as it was still in a cast. So she tugged with her left arm and found that she could pull herself up a little. Her head, though, fell backward. She struggled for a moment till she felt Darren’s right hand behind her head.
“It’s okay.” He whispered when her eyes darted towards his face. “Just this once.”
Once she was sitting up, she loosened her grip on his arm and lifted her left arm as high as possible, about chest level. Darren sat on the bed and wrapped her up in a hug in one movement. She forgot to breathe for a few seconds as she felt enveloped in a warm electric fluid. She could feel the butterflies striking her diaphragm. Lea could feel his heart beating against her breast and his lungs inhaling and exhaling. The sensation came through his shirt and her hospital gown. She blushed, realizing it was all she had on. But he loved her. He had said so.

  • “Rightly Wrong or Wrongly Right”

At the back door, she opened it and strode outside. She closed it quickly behind her. She hadn’t heard anything but knew it was only a matter of minutes till Dania sent someone in after her. She ran to the fence. Adara hoped there were no cameras, though Adara figured there probably were several. She did her best to walk without looking around as if she belonged and behaved normally.
There was a second gate in the fence surrounding the hangers, besides the one they came through with the limo. Unfortunately, the entrance to the second gate wasn’t coded and was only large enough for people or motorcycles. She set off towards it, imagining every sound was someone yelling her name. But the locked bathroom door had to buy her some time, and Marshall had promised to help too.
She came to the gate and went through it. She turned in the direction she knew Dean had parked. She knew she could see him now, or his car, if she looked. But Adara didn’t want to draw attention to herself. She kept looking straight ahead as if she had no emotions.
Suddenly the mustang came into her line of sight. Her heart raced. She could see Dean’s head too as he stood by his door, facing the plane. Then Adara did something she had never done before. She went to the passenger door, put her hand on the doorknob, and pulled.
The door handle gave to her tug, and the door opened. She didn’t look towards Dean. She didn’t want to risk any movement or motion that might show up on cameras. She quickly got into the car pulling the door shut behind her.

  • The Day the Skyfel: Shadows of the Past

The edge of a building beyond them exploded outward; the sound of it shook Sophia’s car violently. It was an extraordinary remarkable sight as the debris spread outward in slow motion; Sophia’s only thought was, “Isn’t that amazing.” For a second, they were the only words she had in her mind.
A second later, Sophia saw a man in the distance tumble. The flying debris had struck him and knocked him off his feet. Sophia fought shock and denial. The scene before her was not occurring. She was Hallucinating. Someone was filming a movie here today. Sophia had missed the notification. Things like this did not happen in everyday life. If it was not a movie set, then she was going crazy. Her mind was playing tricks on her. She might have fallen to sleep, and now she must be dreaming.
She heard another boom and deep rumble coming from her left. She looked. Dust was rising from where the parking garage had stood. It must be a movie set that had been a controlled demolition. How could a hundred vehicles and the people moving about within the structure have been crushed? All of them were buried under the concrete in an instant. However, Sophia understood now. She looked up at the sky, wondering if the bombs had fallen from a bomber airplane. She saw nothing overhead.
She wasted no time. Turning her key that was still in the ignition and yanking off her earbuds, she started the vehicle. Someone was blowing up UC Davis, and she did not have time to decide who might be creating the destruction. She wanted out of there immediately. She quickly reversed her car back and out of the parking space.

  • “On the Hill”

I should have known better. I shouldn’t have answered the door. I was foolish. But I answered it. That is when he turned to face me. His hoody was hiding all the tattoos. His eyes were steely. “Hey Hey Miranda.” He grinned at me, but it wasn’t pleasant. It was an evil, wicked grin. I shivered.
“Stan!” I gasped in shock. He had to have followed me the night before.
“Thought you got rid of me, didn’t you?” He snarled. “I bet your phone is off, or maybe you went into airplane mode.” And with a quick motion he opened the screen with a bang and stepped up into the house.
“Stan!” I took a step back, but Buster came out of nowhere and jumped at Stan.
“What the fuck!” He bellowed and hit my dog. “Get this shit dog off of me and put him away, or I will kick him.”
I grabbed buster by the collar. He had backed off from Stan because he was used to friendly people, not violent ones. “Come on Buster.” I whispered. “Please baby come on.” I led him into the bathroom only a few feet away and inside. I pulled the door shut and jumped when Stan’s hand touched my ass.
“Hey baby why are you so uptight. Loosen up. I am here, you are here and we are alone. He pointed into my room and the bed. “Lets fuck.” And he made a dive towards my face leaning into my right arm pressed into the wall
“I don’t do things like that.” I managed to get out, shoving against him.
Stan pulled back. I saw the anger in his eyes and something else. “You are a Virgin?” he rumbles. “Oh fuck that’s even better.” He put his arm around me and slammed our bodies together, and pressed something unmistakable into my hip. “You feel me? That’s all for you baby.” He slammed into me again.
“Not yet.” I shuddered. “Please not yet. I am not ready.” There was no escaping the flash of anger this time. He was furious at me.
