Ana continued to take a few more deep breaths. At first, she stared at the building without blinking, but her eyes began to hurt. Then Ana forced herself to blink often and rapidly. She was sure it had been too long, and she had missed it. She leaned towards Leo. She never took her eyes off the building but hissed, “What is the time?”
“4:40 pm.” He replied as the numbers switched.
Ana frowned. They had never discussed how long she should watch if the vision never came. How long would it take? It had been 10 hours and 50 minutes since waking. Wasn’t it past time? She was about to turn to Mr. Abbott.
But then it happened. A very bright light flashed halfway up the building. It was like someone had many mirrors facing the sun, reflecting directly on her face. She wanted to close her eyes, but she forced herself to keep them open. The flash got brighter and brighter until she could see the building coming apart and exploding outward in a blast that grew until the whole building was gone.
The blast began to eat through other buildings, moving in all directions till the financial district was gone and the mushroom cloud was beginning to form directly overhead where ground zero had stood. But now, the cloud was approaching Ana, and she could hear it. A loud sound deafened her; it was all she could hear. She fought the overwhelming need to cover her ears, close her eyes and drop to her knees, screaming. The cloud engulfed her. She was moving back towards the water. -

On the one hand, going back to the party was the right thing for Adara. But it seemed wrong she couldn’t remember half of what had happened since she had left the party and she had lost her phone and cards. She didn’t recognize the man or recall him taking them. She didn’t recollect the blow. But Adara knew she had a massive bump on her head. Her family would ask questions she couldn’t answer.
On the other hand, if she stayed out all night, she’d have to go home eventually. So, staying out all night was the wrong decision. She would be in even bigger trouble if she did. But she could spend additional time with Dean if she didn’t go home. And staying with Dean felt right to her. And if she were lucky, she would remember everything before she went home.
She looked at Dean. He was watching her and kept glancing at his watch. Finally, when he looked at her and saw she was looking at him, he spoke. “We have to get going if you want to meet your chauffeur. We will be late as it is.” He didn’t want to take her back. She didn’t remember anything. Besides, the police officer and the medic entrusted him with her health and memory. If she remembered or had a symptom, it was up to him to call them or take her to the ER. He couldn’t help her if she were at home. But he couldn’t just ask her to come home with him, too much too soon. Besides, he and his cousin had argued at the party. He had a feeling he might bother him tonight. He’d already texted him ten times, wanting to know where he’d gone and if he’d taken “the rich girl” with him. -

“I want to show you the view before the food gets here.” He explained, pointing to the balcony. He had a feeling Amanda would appreciate it. Julianne never had.
“Okay.” She replied and nodded. Again she checked in on her insides. Amanda was a little surprised. She was not numb anymore. She was enjoying herself. It had been years and years since her last personal conversation. No, that was not right. Amanda had a lot of conversations. What did she mean? It was Ana that had not had a conversation recently. Yes, but she was Amanda.
Leo opened his sliding glass door and motioned Amanda to go through first. She stepped out into the fresh air and sunlight, There was a breeze this afternoon, and it immediately swept by Amanda and moved her hair and dress ever so slightly. She stepped to the edge, gripped the railing, and looked out. It was indeed a beautiful view. The house sat on a hill, and most of the surrounding buildings were not more than two stories. She could see the whole skyline.
“Wow,” Amanda breathed. And she closed her eyes as another gust swept by her, giving her goosebumps up and down her arms.
Leo Turner had left the door open and had stepped to the balcony and put his right hand about a foot from Amanda’s left hand. But he was not looking at the view. Leo was looking at Amanda. As he watched, the wind moved her hair, and she shut her eyes. Leo saw the goosebumps then. He wondered about them. Leo inched his hand closer till it was about three inches away from hers. He leaned on the rail with his left forearm. Amanda was the most beautiful woman Leo Turner had ever seen. And she was in his house, on his balcony.
Amanda was having trouble. The wind was not stopping, and the goosebumps kept hitting her in waves. She was feeling strange. She almost felt happy. It was a little like how she felt while living on the farm, the farm. No, that was wrong, all wrong. She was Amanda from Michigan. And there was no farm. She forced herself to open her eyes. But this time when she looked at the city she saw something else. She did not see the beauty. Instead, she saw the bomb from her dream. She gasped and shivered violently and turned her back to the view covering her eyes. -

“Adara?” Marshall asked finally, pausing in the aid. “Can we talk now?”
Adara felt the danger of crying had passed, but she didn’t want to talk. She opened her eyes to look up at Marshall but said nothing.
Marshall saw the disdain in her eyes and sighed. “I’m sorry.” He spoke. And he said no more.
Adara couldn’t resist. He said something she wanted to be clarified. “Sorry for what?” She inquired, studying him
“I am sorry about your family. You deserve something better. You should have a different one.” He whispered. And he sighed again and looked away.
Adara narrowed her eyes. “How is my family your fault?”
“Because it is,” Marshall paused. “May I sit down?”
Adara nodded but didn’t open her mouth. Instead, she took the washcloth from him and watched him sit down.
Marshall took a deep breath and sunk onto the bed beside Adara. She watched him as he closed his eyes and counted to ten. He was about to reveal something he had promised never to tell. He had signed a legal document. If Dania found out, she would fire him at the very least. Who knew what else she could do to him. But it was clear things between Adara and the rest of the family were intolerable. And he owed it to Adara at least to tell her the truth and help her escape if she desired.
He opened his eyes and looked at the girl beside him. Adara was still staring at him. Where could he start the story? Marshall had heard once the best place to start the story was at the beginning. He turned to Adara. “I had a sister once.” He began. He paused. Adara blinked but otherwise didn’t move. “She died a long time ago.” Again, he stopped and looked at Adara. -

Lea needed more air. Why was he talking to her? He had left that night and said he would stay away; he had not said anything to her. Instead, Darren had directed his statements towards Blake. Each one burned like flame. But now he was speaking to her. It didn’t make sense. Lea wanted to cover her eyes to keep in tears. But her right hand hurt. And her left hand had gotten stuck between her body and the couch. If Lea had time, she could move, but she couldn’t do it quickly enough. She had to look at Darren, as he had asked her. She turned her head and met his eyes. But it was already too late; tears were streaming down her face.
Darren sat back on his heels; he caught one glimpse of her eyes. Then the tears started to stream down her cheeks. In that one moment, her eyes looked so hurt, so broken. Even Blake had not looked that way when he cried the day he came home. Darren knew why his brother had problems from combat overseas. But Lea hadn’t even looked this broken in his truck after his vehicle struck her. When she woke up in the hospital, her face was defiant. -

Moment by moment
Suddenly everything grew silent around her. There was no longer the distant noise of traffic. There was no chirping or squawking of birds. There were no voices or the laughter of children. It was utterly silent. It was like someone had hit the mute button on the TV.
Katherine kept her eyes closed and her head down as tears continued to fall. All the worry of the last two years and especially of the most recent days overwhelmed her completely. It filled her with intense fear. Then an instant later, it slipped away. It was like the inhaling and exhaling of a single breath.
She heard a soft rustling in the weeping willow tree. A cool breeze drifted over her head. Then, as before, many days ago, it seemed, at the end of another game in the past, she heard a voice. It came from behind her and above her, or possibly from her head. But deep inside she knew that it was coming from someone real and alive standing behind her.
“Why are you crying?” The voice inquired. “What’s wrong, Katherine?” It was the same voice, the one who helped her after the last home game. He spoke her name. She felt a soft, warm touch on her left shoulder. How did he know her name? She must have fallen asleep. It was possible. “Tell me what’s wrong.” The voice spoke kindly.Coming May 2022

He focused on her. “Oh my love,” the limb she had released came up and brushed her face, “my naiad of the forest.” And he kissed her then, gently on the nose. “We are so connected. You and I and the forest, we are all bound together.”
“But when I join you, I will be with you always?” She asked with a gasp, gazing into his eyes.
And a smile spread over his face, resembling the crack in a trunk. “Yes, my love, we are fated tied together with destiny and fate.” He was still brushing her, her hair, her chin, her arms. “I am yours, and you are mine, I will be for eternity.”
“And how will I be? How will it feel?” she breathed, closing her eyes, feeling the goosebumps run up and down her arm.
“You will change, it has already begun,” and he brought a bit of hair forward and showed her the strands—tiny branches, “There is no stopping it now.” Their eyes met, and for a second he was worried. “You do understand my love?” and she nodded and smiled. -
