  • “On the Hill”

I didn’t see it coming. I was utterly distracted. I was watching Erik as he moved and talked to Levi. His shoulders were broad. And his forearms were thick. I was daydreaming about later when I felt better. I was daydreaming about when we could start fooling around.
But at one point, without warning, the driver-side door opened. I could see Erik. It wasn’t Erik. I jumped and looked into the driver’s seat. It was a man with a hoodie drawn over his face and sunglasses. And lots of tattoos were visible on his face and arms. My heart sank. There was only one person it could be.
    “Stan!” I gasped.
He grinned at me, Showing his yellow teeth. “Hello, Miranda.” He said evilly.
Erik had left the keys in the car. They were electronic, so all Stan had to do was push the button. He was already making a button and putting the vehicle into gear. I was completely frozen. I should have undone my seat belt and jumped out of the car at that point. But I didn’t.
“Don’t.” I cried, I was crying by this point.
“ You’re mine.” He said and stepped on the gas.
But the second before he hit the gas, another door opened. It was the door behind me in the back seat, and it was Erik. He put one foot in, and Stan hit the gas, Erik pulled himself in, and the door slammed shut.
I only knew it was Erik because he let go of the door he grabbed my right arm around the side of the chair by the door and whispered into my right ear. “Miranda.” My body tingled.
Stan was speeding over the gravel and bumps with such force that the car was bouncing. But he seemed to sense the presence in the back seat because he looked back and saw Erik.

“Why do you say that? What do you mean? I don’t understand.” She felt a slight feeling of panic rising from someplace deep inside of her core. Katherine yearned to reach out to grab him, but the closed door was in the way. She didn’t move.
“I am worried about circumstances and how they fall into place. Things do not always go the way they should, even if you know what will happen. You know, Katherine, existence is not easy to control.” He trailed off for a moment, then started again. “I just got a bad feeling about something; I can’t explain it.”
“Should we leave here?” She asked, peeking beyond him to the empty lot, then behind her, to the trees, where he was still looking. She felt suddenly as if someone or something was there, reaching towards her.
“No, not here, not now.” He replied, smiling again. Justin looked at her and met her eyes when she peered back at him. “I am sure we are safe for now, safe here.” His hands were deep in his jacket pockets.
“Are you cold? Do you want to come in?” She asked, pointing towards the passenger seat.
“I don’t know.” He said, looking slightly uneasy at the suggestion.
She nodded, “I feel like taking a walk. Would you go for a walk with me?” She inquired.
“Yes, I rather walk.” He smiled wide
“Okay.” She turned the car back on and rolled up her windows. Then she got out, locking the door behind her. Katherine swiveled to him. “It’s so quiet here, isn’t it?”
He nodded, agreeing. “Sometimes, I think it’s too quiet,” Justin replied suddenly as an afterthought.
“Why?” She tilted her head again, smiling as she did so.
“I don’t know. I guess it seems like it could be the calm before the storm. You’ve heard that old cliché.” He glanced at her and shrugged. She nodded. He added, “I am ready for our walk.” So, they passed on into the woods, receding into silence.
Katherine reached out and linked her arm through his. He turned to look down at her and smiled. So, they strolled together through the silence before the storm.

  • “The Day the Skyfel: Ground Zero”

“And who is this.” He pointed at Ana after Leo put his wallet away.
“This is my lover and future wife. I will be marrying her as soon as the divorce is final.” Leo announced, pulling Ana closer with both arms.
Ana glanced up at the mention of marriage. She looked up at Leo, and a smile played on her lips. At least they were dying together. Leo could have abandoned her at any time. But he was here by her side. Leo sensed her gaze. He met her eyes, smiled, and kissed the top of her head.
The security guard studied the pair for a moment. Leo was sure they were seconds from death. Finally, the man pointed. “I need to make a phone call. You two follow me.” He led them to an empty desk in the back right corner of the lobby near the stairs.
Leo’s heart sank. Another delay, and it was already nine. And if the man were going to try to get ahold of Julianne or Madeline, they could be there for hours waiting. But he obeyed and followed the man. He briefly wondered if there was a way to get him in a room alone and kill him the way he had destroyed Madeline
The man led them to the desk and motioned to a single chair. “Go ahead, one of you sit.” And he picked up a landline phone receiver and pushed a few keys.
Leo glanced at the chair and frowned. But then he smirked. He had an idea. He was going about this the wrong way. Ana looked frightened, and he looked anxious. If they were lovers, they should be all over each other. He pulled Ana to the chair, sat, and pulled her down on his lap. She gave him a look of surprise but allowed him to position her on his lap.
“Play along.” He whispered in her ear. And he kissed her ear, ran his lips across her cheek, and kissed her again. He closed his eyes and moaned, “oh baby.” He softly mumbled his lips on hers.

  • After the Rain

“Sheila. Meet Jon.” Jerry said, pointing at the other man.
“Hiya.” He said, but his eyes were on my body.
I sat with a plop. I didn’t talk for the next fifteen minutes. I sat silently in between the two men listening to the constant chatter. I was asked at least five times if I wanted a drink. I said no each time, but somewhere around 5:30 pm, a drink appeared in front of me. I do not honestly know who put it there. It could have been either guy or even the people siting across the table. I eyed it. There was no way I was tasting it.
“Hey!” Said Jon at one point. “Sheila!”
I turned to look At him but said nothing. I do not think he noticed because he went ahead to say.
“Do you got a boyfriend?” He asked.
I shook my head even though my brain told me not to tell them anything. Call me crazy, but at that moment, I look passed between jerry and Jon.
“Aww” jerry said. And he touched me on my arm causing me to jump. “That’s too bad.” But he didn’t look like he thought it was too bad. He looked happy about it. His eyes were shining.
“Yeah. That is awful.” Jon said. Between the two of them talking I was turning my head back and forth. “ why would someone break up with you?”
I wanted to correct him and tell him that I never had one in the first place, but my brain told me not to. My brain reminded me that they would not be able to hear me anyways. I shrugged instead.
“Ah baby.” Jerry said suddenly changing his tone. “ you haven’t touched your drink.” He moved it closer to me till it was inches from the edge of the table.
    “But….” I started to say.
“ come on I’ll buy you as many refills as you like just drink up.” Jerry Was leaning towards me, looking excited.
“ hey and if he runs out of money I’ll buy them.” Jon spoke up from behind me. He held up a Wallet Stuffed full of cash. “ stick with me, baby. I’m rich.”
My mind was working overtime. I did not fall for the money for the baby talk. I had not Asked an asked for a drink I was thirsty but I didn’t want to drink it.. I knew that these two were just trying to get me drunk. They had planned to engage in a threesome with me, or at least find a girl get her drunk, and take her home. I was not falling for it. But for the moment, I was trapped between these two creeps. It seemed to me they kept moving closer and breathing on me. I felt smothered. How was I going to escape?

  • The Day the Skyfel: Shadows of the Past

Slowly she woke up. He was beside her on the couch shaking her. “You’re not listening!” His voice was loud and accusing.
“Yes, yes I was.” She lied.
“So, are you with me, will you join me in this new world?” He said, forgetting his last sentence.
“What?” She asked, confused. She had missed a lot.
“You were not listening. You need to listen to me; I want you to listen.” He was holding onto her arm, and it hurt. “I can be a king, I can rule, and you can be my consort. All you must do is obey me. We can be rich. You are perfect. You are quiet; you are innocent. I can teach you everything I know.” He was inches away from her face, his breath smelled of alcohol. His eyes shone brightly. There was power, evil, and madness in those eyes.
Sophia knew then what had been watching and waiting for her in that house. It had been him. She was afraid now, terrified. She had to get out. She had to get away from him. She felt so tired, though, so exhausted.
“Well?” He was shaking her now. “What’s your answer?”
“I think I need to go now,” she whispered.
“Go? Where can you go?” He laughed and she felt cold. “Get up, go on; I dare you.” He pulled her to her feet and let her go. She took a step and fell. She was so tired. Sleep. She wanted to sleep. She looked up at him. He was so far up there, high, and mighty, and so much stronger than herself.
He laughed again. “You’re stuck here, Sophia, whether you like it or not.” He bent down to her eye level. His eyes were steely, and he was not smiling. “Is that your answer? Is it no? Well, you can say no but you are still mine. You cannot leave. I would still like a yes. You can change your mind. I will be gentle with you, I promise. But if you say no….” He shrugged and grabbed both her arms. He pulled her up roughly and pushed her down on the couch.

  • On the Hill

My eyes popped open to look him in the eyes. But I was crying so hard I couldn’t see him. I sobbed and nodded. And then he took my breath away by wrapping me up tightly in both of this arms.
“It will be okay, Miranda; thank you for coming here to talk to me. I would like to take care of you.” I couldn’t believe what he was saying. He was thanking me for making his life more complicated? Was he offering to take care of me? “Let me take you to the hospital.” He whispered this into my ear. He had pushed my hood back.
I couldn’t refuse. I nodded and sobbed. At least I could get treatment. I didn’t have to report it. And they could give me medications, couldn’t they? And they could figure out what he did to my shoulder and if he gave me a concussion. My body was going haywire. I was hot and cold and electric all over all at once.
“Thank you,” he whispered. “And we can put your dog in my apartment. What is his name?” his breath was tickling me? If I hadn’t been weeping, I would have giggled.
“Buster.” I gasped. His lips were brushing my ear and the side of my head. It was almost as if he wanted to kiss me or maybe was smelling me. It was making the whole of my body tingle, and my stomach was sick with excitement.
“Does he need to go outside first?” He asked. He finally pulled back far enough.
“Probably, I didn’t get a leash.” I added. The sensation had stopped the tears. I could see his eyes. They looked kind, excited, and something else. It looked like love, at least a movie version of it. I felt as if I couldn’t look away.
“That’s okay. I have rope. I don’t have a dog currently. My dog died last year.” He broke his eyes from mine long enough to look back at Buster and give him a good hard rub behind the ears. “Good dog.” He was smiling , and his voice was genuine.
When Erik’s eyes met mine again, he looked even more excited than before. “Okay. We have got to get going.” He pointed at my seat belt. “can I help you put it on?” I Nodded. I was speechless at the moment.
When I had decided to come up here, I had not dared to wish that Erik would personally help me with my dog or take me to the hospital and stay with me. At this rate, he would ask me to spend the night with him and probably longer. I didn’t even know how to put it into perspective.
