• The Day the Skyfel: Shadows of the Past

“Hey.” He said as she gained her balance. Her body was protesting sharply with pain. “What’s your name?”
She almost slipped up. “So….” She began to say, gripping the sink. But she stopped abruptly. No! what was wrong with her. What was a boy’s name that started with S? There had to be one. “Sam!” She blurted out. Her voice was almost normal. Sophia hoped he did not notice the hesitation.
“Come on, Sam!” The stranger said, “Let’s go to the living room and get you some medication and bandaging supplies.” She turned slowly. “It is just to the left here and down the hall.” The man was motioning, but as he turned away, he said, “My name is Cameron.”
Sophia, so consumed by the pain and the intense desire to keep her gender a secret, almost did not notice. She had made her way into the hall, in fact, and was following him down it, leaning heavily on the wall and grimacing with each step. It was a full minute before her brain registered it. “Cameron.” Her brain repeated.
Sophia, as Sam, slowly stopped at the door to the living room. She almost felt that her leg was growing numb to the pain. Was it hurting as much as it had been? “Cameron!” Her brain insisted.
He had stopped in front of Sophia and started moving some things around that she could not see in the darkroom. She was hesitant to enter the room. Her brain screamed at her one more time. “HIS name is CAMERON.” She froze in the middle of the doorway. No. It could not be, Sophia told herself, straining her eyes, attempting to focus on the man in front of her. It could not be THAT Cameron. Indeed there were other people in the area with that same name.
At that moment, a light went on in front of her. The light was not from Cameron’s flashlight. This was a full-fledged light that lit the whole room in one flash. Sophia automatically placed a hand over her eyes to shield them. The other hand found the doorframe to steady herself. Pain shot through her mind; the light was so bright.
“Oooh, sorry bro. I should have warned you.” Cameron said. He looked at her, or rather, Sam.

  • Losing You

  • “Moment by Moment”

“You’ve got makeup on!” He said accusingly.
“So, I do.” She said, not looking at him.
“Is it for him? What are you trying to do to him?” He demanded.
“Mom put it on me,” she said defiantly, finally confronting him. “It wasn’t my idea.”
“Yeah, right.” He snorted. “You are turning into one of those girls, aren’t you?” He said it disgustedly.
She narrowed her eyes. “No, I am not. I told you mom put it on me.”
Mark rolled his eyes. “You’re doing it to get him to sleep with you, aren’t you?”
“No, I am not!” Katherine said, throwing the newspaper back on the coffee table.
“Now what?!” Their mom demanded, coming into the den with her hands on her hips.
“How can you let her dress like that?” Mark said, jumping up to face their mother. He was mad at her too.
“Katherine, you mean. Mark, she looks lovely!” Kaylyn sounded completely annoyed at her youngest child.
“You don’t get it, do you, mom? She is changed a lot in the last week. And it’s all that guy’s fault!” Mark said this very loudly.
“Justin?” Kaylyn was taken aback. “Mark, what is wrong with you? What are you implying?”
“Nothing.” Mark growled. He threw his arms up. “Absolutely nothing is wrong with me. Everyone in this house is just blind!!”
“Mark.” Kaylyn had moved her arms from her hips to in front of her, arms folded. She was tapping one finger of her right hand against her left arm. “I want you to stop this. Now.” She said this sternly in her no-nonsense mother voice. “You are overreacting.” She rolled her eyes. “I do not understand why you don’t like the idea of Katherine having a guy friend. It is crazy. I want you to be nice to him tonight. He said he would drive himself so we will be meeting him there. I want you to be pleasant to all of us, Kathy especially. Do you understand?” Mark grunted. “Are you listening to me, Mark?” Mark nodded. “Are you going to enjoy tonight?” He sighed and nodded again. “Now! I don’t want to hear another word about this tonight!”

  • “The Day the Skyfel: Ground Zero”

He turned to Ana and helped her back to the edge of the rock; he explained, with one arm around her back, “I am going to lower myself down till I have to let go, and then I want you to slide over the edge in my direction. I should be able to keep your head above the water.” He kissed her forehead again.
Ana gave an incredibly soft, “okay.” She was staring at the water, scared of the cold, fearful of slipping out of the harness he had made her, scared of how long it might take.
“It will be okay.” He whispered, putting his other arm back around her for a moment, and squeezing her tightly; she was shivering slightly and seemed colder than she had a few minutes before. “I will check every few minutes that you are still attached, and we will make it back to shore. Just lay on your back and move your arms and legs whatever way you did on your journey here, and you will be okay.” He kissed her.
The delay was only bringing on the night; Leo gave her one last tight hug and told her it was time; he turned and lowered himself into the water, dropping down the rock wall the last foot and a half. He glanced up, worried that he had yanked on her and pulled her down, but she was still perched at the edge, her face wrapped in terror, unmoving.
“Okay, Ana.” He raised his voice a little as the ocean filled his ears. He lifted his arms. “Come on, my gorgeous agent, Just slide off; I’ve got you.”
Ana was shaking so bad she could not even lift her hands off the rock. She did not want to do this, but there was no option to stay. Ana closed her eyes and fought the tears. She sent a prayer heavenward. “Please, please, don’t let me be hurt anymore. Please let us both get to land together.” Then she forced herself to lean back and move her rear to the edge of the rock. She kept her eyes closed till she was teetering on the very brink. She opened her eyes and shrieked as she toppled forward into the freezing water.

  • “Open the Door, Let the Sun In”

“Anytime, anywhere, kiss me.” It was her turn to whisper. Again, she closed her eyes and puckered her lips. But this time, her lips parted. Lea mentally told herself to give him a hint. She didn’t mind if he didn’t catch on. But Lea thought to offer. And as she felt his lips touch hers again, she parted them more. She didn’t want to initiate contact by touching his lips with her tongue. But the door was open if he wished to come inside. Darren’s arms wrapped around her again. Her arms tingled.
Darren felt the gap. He felt deep in the pit of his stomach organs flipped in anticipation. Somehow Lea read his mind and was offering him a taste. He gingerly sampled her lips. They tasted sweet somehow. Encouraged, Darren gingerly pushed in further, finding her velvet tongue inside.
She allowed him to explore, then nudged her tongue against his lips, tasting him back. Their tongues interacted for a few minutes, eyes closed. Finally, Lea seized a fist full of his shirt in her hand. She craved more of him. Lea struggled to give him more of herself, coveting him. But she realized nurses and physicians roamed the halls.
Abruptly they heard a noise, and both jumped. It was a knock on the door. Lea and Darren pulled away from each other simultaneously. Lea allowed herself to fall backward onto her pillows. Darren stood up and slipped off the bed, attending to Lea for signs of pain, but she was too busy gazing wide-eyed towards the door. Darren sat promptly as the door opened. He hoped to hide the lump in his pants that kiss had given him. The last thing he needed was a nurse or a doctor to see it.

  • “Rightly Wrong or Wrongly Right”

Adara’s responses were not usual, and her question amazed Dean. “Of course, we can be friends. I want to be your friend, best friend. But I thought we just decided to call this a date.” He tilted his head to the side, attempting to catch sight of her face. She lifted her head to peer at him, a few tears tumbled out of her eyes, but the crying ceased. He gaped back at her in wonder. “Are you crying? What’s wrong?”
“I thought you were saying goodbye to me.” She responded. “But I’m okay now. Are we still driving someplace for food?” She gave him a small smile.
Dean was still trying to make sense of a discussion he had thought would end with her angry at him but hadn’t. It took him a moment to catch up. “Of course. Yes, I just wanted to make sure you were okay with how we met.” He looked to her for a response.
Adara nodded, “I don’t understand why, but it’s okay.” He wasn’t quite content with the response, but he said no more. Instead, Dean turned and led her to the nearest parked car. It was a dark sports car. But, the color wasn’t visible in the dark. Dean opened the passenger’s side door for her. Accustomed to this type of behavior, Adara got in and let him shut her door.
Adara had never driven in a car beside the limousines and her mother’s Maserati. She had never ridden anywhere without a family member or Marshall. It was an altogether new experience. It was a nice car; clearly, whoever owned it took loving care of it. She wondered about the buttons and lights on the dashboard. Adara wanted to ask Dean about them, but she decided a question wasn’t acceptable. It would make her feel like a child. And she didn’t wish to act like a child. She wanted to be a woman. So instead of questioning Dean about the glow and buttons, she turned to Dean and requested. “Tell me about your vehicle.”

  • After the Rain

“Hello?” I asked, praying it was not my mother.
“Thank God, Carrie,. It is me, Ben. Are you still in the bathroom?” I recognized his voice.
    “Yes?” I replied.
“Can you walk still? I didn’t think you wanted me to make a scene but I will if you need me to. And there were two guys out here. But they have moved off since I am two feet from the door.” Ben explained.
I suddenly felt like crying. He was out there, and he was right; I did not want a scene. But was I still able to walk out? I made a quick decision and started to fumble with my high heels. “I’m going to try.” I replied. “I am having trouble seeing and standing.”
“That is not good. Keep talking to me. If you go quiet, I am sending someone in.” Ben said firmly.
He was taking charge. I felt relieved. “Thank you.” I said. And I threw one of the heels on the floor.
“No problem.” He said softly. And his voice sounded kind and gentle.
“I’m just taking off my shoes.” I explained. “I was an idiot and wore heels.”
“That is okay. I am not going anywhere.” He sounded a little like he was smiling.
I threw The other heel on the floor. “Okay. I am coming now. I have colored my hair it is red.” I said, hoping he understood.
“You colored your hair?” He sounded surprised.
“ yes I just want you to know it’s me when I come out.” I felt a lump in my throat. I was halfway to the door. I was walking along holding onto the sinks one by one as I moved along.
“That is okay. I am sure I will recognize you.”
“I am wearing makeup too. And do not have my glasses.” I was trying to get him to understand.
“Carrie. It is okay. You are on the phone with me. I will know it is you.”
I was at the door but suddenly I had a fear. “Are you still by the door?” I asked, I had frozen at the last sink.
“I promise. As soon as you come out the door, you will see me. I am right here.” Ben was talking calmly. I wanted to cry again. He didn’t deserve this. He was a nice guy and had only offered me friendship and I had turned him down in favor of coming down to this hell hole.

  • The Day the Skyfel: Shadows of the Past

Laying where she fell, she rested a while, unmoving. Her leg wound throbbed a bit but finally grew dull and almost painless. Sophia felt sleep creeping over her. With earnest effort, she managed to turn herself over. She was lying on her almost empty backpack. She had nearly forgotten it was on her back. The water was long gone. Only a few rock-hard crumbs were left and the knife. Sophia could feel it hard against the small of her back.
Could she do it now? Could she pull it out of the backpack and turn it on herself, and put it in her gut here, in the middle of climbing the backside of Howell Mountain. She could; she knew she could break free of her body and her wounds then. What would happen after she was dead? Was there an afterlife? Was there still a God to judge her sins? What would he say about the man she killed? If she would go to hell for that sin, then she might as well kill herself now.
Where was God? Was he somewhere in the vast universe, somewhere living among the stars? Or had he died the day the world ended?
She could see the sky and the stars now. She had almost forgotten about them. They were the same. The world had changed around Sophia. It was horrible and cruel now. It was no longer that life she had known before. She had not enjoyed life. But at least life had been livable. Now the only thing to keep her going on was the thought of getting home to her mom and her animals. Tears stung her eyes as she allowed herself to think of them again. She could see their faces in her mind. She could hear her mom’s voice and Monty’s bark in her ears.
The stars above her twinkled and shone sharply into her soul, not caring about the tears or the pain in her body. She closed her eyes, angry now at the peaceful and beautiful stars. How dare they exist. How dare they shine and shimmer as they always had. Sophia’s world had ended. Suddenly, in a few minutes, everything had changed. But the stars remained so high above her and untouched by the things that had destroyed her world. She flung her arm across her eyes as the tears poured out. Silently she cried for her old life, for her mom, dog, and precious cat.
