Identity Crisis
“I have to confess, my Isabel.” I said looking down at her hand in mine.
Isabel winkled her brow. “What do you have to confess my love? She asked
“Isabel, I am not Dashiell.” I explained slowly, looking into her eyes.
Isabel shifted on the couch. “Okay,” she said slowly. “Okay, than who are you?”
I looked down again. “I am not human. Or I mean I wasn’t born human. I am human now. And I am Dashiell now. But I wasn’t born Dashiell or a human.”
Isabel but her lip for a minute, studying me. I was pretty sure she was thinking this was something to do with my PSTD or the fact I had survived and Gabe hadn’t. But it wasn’t that and I knew it.
“Okay, then who are you really?” she asked.
“Don’t be mad at me, Isabel, please. But I was born a dog.” I said. I was looking into her eyes again.
Isabel digested that for a moment chewing on her lip. She wasn’t mad at me. I could see her eyes were only concerned and worried. She was not angry or upset.
“Okay, I accept it. I still love you.” She said finally.
“ there is more, Isabel. I am Toby.” I whispered.
She Blinked and then blinked again. “My dog, Toby?” she asked.
I nodded. “I’m sorry, Isabel. On my birthday, I made a wish to be human so I could take care of you. I’m sorry. The Toby you have now is my clone.“
My Isabelle looked at me. I could tell she thought that I was Imagining it. I tried to think of some proof. So I said. ” You gave Toby? A birthday cake this year. Actually. Your aunt made him a cake. You were tired and forgot his birthday.”
My Isabel. Blinked at me again. “Well, my aunt could have told you that. But. If you want to be my dog. You can be. I still love you.”

Open the Door, Let the Sun In
“Why are you here?” Lea replied, finally able to ask the question that was bothering her. There was nothing else for them to discuss. What else could be said to a stranger who was always by her bedside when she awoke and wouldn’t explain the reason for his presence?
Darren looked surprised and slightly embarrassed. “Because I hit you with my truck,” he responded, visibly struggling to utter these words.
“But it was not your fault,” Lea explained. “Why do you feel like you’re responsible for my condition.” She began running out of oxygen while using such long sentences.
“I was driving my truck, and you were on the road. I hit you.” Darren replied, wrinkling his brow. “I should have been able to stop the truck before it hit you. But I struck you. How is this not my fault?”
“It is not your fault because I was waiting for a vehicle to run me over,” Lea explained, floundering while endeavoring to sit up. Eventually, she raised herself to one side after a few minutes of pushing her muscles to the limit. But her pain increased to nearly unbearable.
“You wanted to be hit? Why?” Now, it was Darren’s turn to ask her questions as he tried to see into her mind.
“Because I wanted to die,” Lea announced, after allowing herself to fall back into place, without hesitating and without any emotion. Why not confess, she wondered? Maybe if she exhibited complete honesty, he would go away and leave her alone. The ultimate goal was for Darren to leave the hospital room and never return. Lea narrowed her eyes to block out the light and watched him for any indication of movement toward the exit.
“Why did you want to die? We’re so young, and we have so much left to experience.” Darren was genuinely surprised and intrigued.
“I’m twenty-six. I don’t feel young.” Lea changed the subject, not wishing to explain why she wanted to die. It was easier somehow, while regretting her confession.
“I’m twenty-four; what’s the big deal? We’re not even thirty; we have many years left yet.” Darren leaned forward towards her; his face was only two feet away from hers.

Skyfel: The Bombers
The food was gone all too quickly and she held her tongue not asking for more. The first star was just beginning to come out she looked straight up at it. Once more, she felt a lump in her throat at the beauty of it, but her grandmother would never see another star
She sighed then a deep long sigh. The worst part was it hadn’t even been 24 hours. Already they’d walked so many miles and covered so much ground and they had found out that her grandmother was dead now she was alone in the world with Devon and Sasha
She told herself she was lucky she told herself that she could have gone with them the day before and been dead in the warehouse too or wherever they had sent her uncle. In that case Sasha would have been dead as well because she would have had nobody to take care of her
But to the girl alone with a man and a dog under the darkening sky watching the stars come out it was little comfort to think of it that way. It didn’t matter how lucky she was what was making her so sad was the fact that she had no family left
her mom her grandmother’s grandfather father we’re all gone. Not only that the world had fallen apart so any further distant relatives were unreachable a few tears trickled down her face as she remembered her cousins great aunt and her mother’s cousins
She wondered where in the great wide world they were. Were they alive, or had they been taken to by the strangers in the bus, two similar warehouses, and met identical fates to her grandmother or uncle
She realized there was no way of knowing, and even if she did, there was nothing she could do about it. It was gone over. She sighed and closed her eyes, dropping them down onto her lap. The water dripped off her cheeks and into her clothes from her chin
It hadn’t even been 24 hours since the buses came. she remembered she had woken up sometime around midnight. It was barely dark now; another few hours to go yet for that 24-hour mark, but it seemed like it had been a lifetime.

The Rescue of Susie
Unexpectedly, Brad grinned. “Oh. I suppose it has to be about Susie?”
Samuel Scowled More now. “Brad, You know that I don’t like you to mention her name. Coming out of your mouth, it’s just a dirty word.”
But Brad continued to grin. “Samuel, what if I told you that she isn’t dead?”
Samuel blinked. He thought maybe he had heard his father. Incorrectly. Or maybe his father was teasing him. So finally, he said, “fuck off.” And stood taking his empty snack packages out of the room.
“ Hey, Sam, don’t go. I’m serious.” Brad said jumping up.
Samuel whirled on his father. “Brad, I’ve had it with your jokes about Susie. I love her I will always love her. You are a dick and have no idea what she was like.”
Brads Eyes got huge. “I know exactly what she’s like.” He said
Samuel didn’t respond to that. Only his eyes narrowed. “OK, Brad, have it your way. You claim that she’s alive. Where is she been for the last two years and three months?” He waved his free hand around.
“ Well, She is still in town but sick. her family made up the lie because She has an immune suppressant disease and has to live underground, and all air must be Filtered through an elaborate system..” Brad explained.
Samuel Took a deep breath and held it for a moment. Finally, he exploded. “You are the worst dad. I can’t believe that you would make up this story. Do you really think I am dumb enough to believe what you just said?“ He went stomping away through the empty containers in the trash, and then started down the hall towards his room.
Brad came right on his heels. “Sam, wait. I can prove it to you. You can meet her!” He grabbed Samuel’s arm.
Samuel stopped dead in his tracks and faced his father. “Are you screwing with me?” He demanded.
“ Sam, I swear this is legit. I talked to her stepfather. I explained the situation. He is completely willing for you to come and visit her occasionally. You have to clean up and you can’t stay long but you can date now, isn’t that awesome?” Brad’s Eyes were shining.
Sam still didn’t believe it. “When!” he almost shouted.
“ Tomorrow afternoon, if you’re ready.” Brad let his arm go.
“What time!” Samuel boomed.
“ I’ll call him for an exact time. He just said tomorrow afternoon. But you can’t stay too long. Remember not more than an hour and a half. She’s weak and can’t sit up very long. She also can’t always speak.“ Brad explained.
Samuel was Feeling faint? Was Susu alive? He still didn’t fully believe it, but Tomorrow, seeing her tomorrow? He had to sit down. “ OK, Brad. Tell him I want to come over tomorrow. And if you are fucking with me—”
“ Sam, I promise this isn’t a joke. She is alive and you will see her tomorrow.” Brad held up his hand.

Moment by Moment
Justin felt a buzz in his pocket. He tried to look in that direction, but he felt his forehead brush against the cobwebs. He shivered and put his head down. Could it be his phone? And if it was, was it Katherine? In his current state it was hard for him to focus on anything except the tight space and the spiders. He reached down and grabbed the bag of treats.
He pulled it up and stuck it under his chin and took out a handful of smelly treats. “Snookie. Here kitty, kitty.” He said scattering them in front of him.
Snookie sniffed the air in Justin’s direction. “Meowt?” He said in questioning voice. He sniffed again.
“Here kitty, kitty, kitty.” Justin said, getting desperate. He could not even get his other arm in. Outside he heard Mrs. McQueen’s voice. “Snookie, baby. Here kitty, kitty.” Snookie uncurled himself and took a step. “Meowp.”
Justin took out another handful and put it right in front of his hand, then lay his hand in the dirt. “Snookie, come on, here kitty, kitty, kitty!” Mrs. McQueen was also saying similar things from outside the hatch.
Finally, hunger overtook the fluffy cat, and he inched closer to Justin. Food and someone he knew and his mother’s voice calling from the outside. He was so close now that Justin could almost reach him. But he didn’t move he didn’t breathe. His phone buzzed again. Justin closed his eyes. Who was it and what did they want? The only person he cared about was Katherine. In his mind he saw her. She was on the couch where he had put her. What was wrong? Why was she texting him? He tried to see around her. His pocket buzzed again, jolting him. He opened his eyes. Snookie was closer now, inches away from his hand, happily gobbling up the bits of treats.
Justin made one quick move and grabbed the cat by the scruff. “Got him!” He said, but not too loudly. Snookie made a “Meow!” sound but didn’t try to scratch or bite Justin. Justin wiggled his body backward, dragging the cat with him. When he was far enough out, he got his other hand up and grabbed the cat with both hands and at once pulled him out and handed him up to the waiting hands of Mrs. McQueen.
She took him, cooing over him and thanking Justin at the same time. “Oh, my baby, my sweetheart. Thank you, Justin.”
Justin nodded and closed his eyes, reached back inside for the flashlight and treats. His hands found them. But a vision struck his brain. In it, Katherine was huddled terrified on the couch, and there was a shadow over her, reaching for her. He turned to see who it was. He knew instinctively then what he had not been able to in the dark spider-infested hole under the house. Matthew had gotten to Katherine. He pulled the treats and flashlight out, leaving them at the entrance to the hatch.

For Ransom
James already had his phone out and point at the pair. He caught a zoomed in photo of the gun in the man’s hand, between the blades of uncut grass, flowers and weeds. James moved swiftly, stuffed his phone back in his pocket and as the man held up the gun and pointed it at Brooke’s head James noiselessly ran across the pavement and crashed into the reeds
James hit the man from the side and at an angle. In fact the gun went off at the moment of impact. The bullet missed Brooke’s head by inches. She had heard the ruckus behind her and ducked a moment before impact.
The man and James tussled for a moment. But james managed to get the gun out of his hand. Then he turned and punched him a few times, in a few moves he had the man on the ground knocked out. He didn’t hesitate. He took the zip ties he carried with him and put several on his wrists and ankles.
Then he turned to Brooke, while taking out his phone and dialing 911. She had fallen to her knees. She had crumpled into a little ball and was sobbing her eyes out. She couldn’t watch. She was too terrified of James being killed, then there would be two bodies by the river. Not just her own. She sobbed and sobbed.
She jumped and gave a shriek when he touched her, wrapping his arm around her. He was speaking to the woman dispatcher. “Yes, Kennedy park, by the last parking lot, next to the river. Yes.”
Brooke saw and felt it was James. She buried her face into his backward jacket and trembled against him, still crying uncontrollably.
James hung up the phone and hugged Brooke with two arms. “It’s okay, we are okay.” He murmured into her hair. She shook and shuddered with tears against him. They sat in this way for a few minutes, till he saw the flashing lights approaching. The sun had gone down. the cool bay breeze was pushing against James’ back.
“Brooke I need to get out my badge the police are here.” he kissed her hair. She pulled away, shivering from the wind and trembling from the fear. She sat with her knees against her chest, hugging them. She rocked back and forth, her eyes closed. James’ got his badge and wrapped his left arm around Brooke again.

Open the door, Let the Sun In
Darren longed to hold her close but had not been able to, other than the night he had lifted the broken body from the road and had set it down in his cab, driving to the hospital. Now, lost in thought, his memory returned to the point when they had taken her away.
They initially allowed him to come back to her emergency room. But as the severity of Lea’s injuries became more apparent, they had Darren stand further away as additional people entered the chamber.
He remembered the instant her heart stopped beating but didn’t comprehend the time. Darren may have stood there an hour, helpless to do anything to assist in the resuscitation. Finally, they made him step out of the room into the hall, and a tech returned with the heart defibrillator.
He watched them from the corridor as they rushed around her. The curtain remained cracked even though someone had tugged it closed. Time halted, and Darren felt like his heart climbed into his throat; it would choke him. As he stared at Lea, he spoke the exact words repeatedly. “God, please send her back. God, please send her back.”
Three times they charged the grips and used them on her chest; finally, on the final attempt, her valves began to pump. Then Darren realized tears were rolling down his cheeks, and sobs filled the air.
“Thank you, God.” He repeated it, turning away and closing his eyes.
When he opened them again, Darren could see Lea inhaling and exhaling. Only a few minutes later, they rushed her away to a surgery room. Someone escorted Darren to the waiting room, and he spent twelve hours in a chair. The only break in the monotony occurred when they asked him to explain what had happened.
They mentioned her name; he hadn’t known it before. They admitted that they could not contact her mom; although the phone was ringing, no one answered the call. Then he spoke to the police. They notified him there were no criminal charges; the marks on the road corroborated his statement. This would only change if Lea recovered and gave a different account of the accident.
Darren hadn’t cared about any potential charges that might be filed against him later. He didn’t care whether prison was a possibility. All that mattered was seeing Lea alive and walking again. Darren yearned to stay by her side to see her wake to watch her get better eventually, no matter how long it took.
