• Reincarnation

But a cough and a soft cry interrupted him. Bart stopped abruptly and turned and scrambled back into the cabin. Maria was there, taking her final breaths. She had been watching unable to speak. She knew there was no hope, But she didn’t want to go without one last kiss.

Bart stumbled to her side and fell to her knees, grasping her left hand, tears streaming down his face. “Marie!” he cried, “Marie!” he didn’t know what to say. He knew she had minutes if that. And he had wasted most of them on the asshole who had shot her.

Marie was crying too, soft ,hot burning drops that slipped out of the corner of her eyes. She lifted her right hand, it shook like crazy but she managed to get it up. Bart grabbed it and kissed it.

“Marie, I have so much to say, but now I will never be able to say it.” He said in a desperate tone.

Her mouth twitched in a sad smile. “Bart,” she whispered. “I love you.” She wheeze.

He sobbed and tried to smile, failing miserably, he looked down at her hands, wishing he had brought her a ring. “I love you too, my gorgeous Marie.” And he leaned over her hands into her bosom, sobbing against it.

But Marie knew she was about to go. “Kiss” she gasped with her final breath. Bart lifted his tear stained face he could see the life ebbing away from her gaze. He nodded and closed his eyes and pressed his lips into hers.

Marie saw his last glance and she felt his lips against hers. She closed her eyes and focused on it. Her breathing stopped and her heart pumped its last. Marie’s body shut down. Her last thought was, “if only I could start the day over again, I would have stayed in bed.”

Bart felt her last exhale and the moment her heart stopped beating. He waited, but nothing happened. He pulled back and felt for a pulse. There was none. He gazed at her and all her beauty, but she was gone. He felt numb like he would never feel anything again.

A gasp and gargle interrupted his thoughts. He looked toward the door. Carson. His eyes narrowed.

Bart got to his feet. He walked out of the cabin and stood over the man who was unrecognizable but still living. He narrowed his eyes. Carson’s horse was in a clump of bushes not far away, chewing happily. Beyond stood a few working women watching him, whispered together.

Bart had an idea. He approached the horse. He took the rope off the saddle, brought the horse to Carson’s side, and tied the rope to his ankles. He picked up the revolver, looked inside, noted three bullets remaining. He kept it, turned, rope in hand and mounted the horse.

He clicked his tongue gripped the reigns and began to walk him, attaching the rope to the saddle securely. He glanced back at Carson, and the rope tug on his ankles and his body began to turn, dragging behind them. Bart smirked.

  • Mindi’s Mind

Mindi’s mom watched him go, Disapproving.  But once he was out of sight she nodded to John and he allowed at the door to bang shut they turned together and mutually moved towards the bed.

“ alright dear, John is here now and I am sure he can make you see reason.”  She gave her brother a smile across the bed as he had approached on the left side.  But then she focused it back on her daughter, scrutinizing closely.

“He made you cry didn’t he!” She blurted out after a moment.

“ it wasn’t him it was a situation; we were talking mutually about something that happened to both of us,” Mindi replied curtly.

“And what is that?” her mom demanded, tilting her head a little.

“ I don’t know that any of that is your business.” Mindi said defiantly. Her mom was talking too loud, giving Mindi a headache.

Her mother shook her head and looked over at John, disgusted.  “As you can see ever since Graham entered her life she has been nothing but unreasonable and foolish.”

John nodded and said darkly, “I see.”

“Mom! We are married,  It’s not necessary for me to share every aspect of my life with you, and very selfish for you to wish me to!” Mindi was already done with the conversation.

“Honey!”  Her mother said. “You are my only child. And besides that, I’m your mother. You’re supposed to be closer with me than anybody! And the fact that you have forsaken me for Graham is prosperous!”

“Mom! I think you should leave!” Mindi snapped

“Hold on a minute!” John spoke up, “I haven’t spoken!”

Mindi and her mother both looked at him in surprise, almost as if they had forgotten he was there.

He continued, “ as I see it graham is only cause for contention in the family, it was his car you were driving, and his residence you were residing in!  I suggest quick eradication and divorce remedy the situation!”

“You will suggest nothing of the kind!” Mindi had heard enough; she struggled to face her uncle. “It is my life, not yours; you are entirely out of line by endeavoring to manipulate my life choices!”

“Listen to my child,” her mother was shocked, “I’ve lost her completely!” she put a hand on her mouth.

“No!” Mindi was furious. “You forced me to finally take a stand and propel you away before it’s too late!”

“It’s a shame,” John said, “really it is, such a waste!”

“I have had it!” Mindi shouted, and in that moment she was so angry she couldn’t see straight. She pointed where she thought the door was. “Both of you get out of my room! Now!!”

“Oh!” her mom was in tears now. “He has her in his clutches entirely! I cannot believe it!” she turned away and began to move towards the door.

Uncle John moves quickly towards her. “If I could suggest a doctor to evaluate her mental health?” he said in a stage whisper.

“You do that!” Mindi bellowed, “and I will throw my ice water at them when they come see me!” she wished more than anything she could stand up and slam the door after them. She was breathing hard and her heart was pounding in her ears. She was vaguely aware when the door shut behind them and she forced her body to relax and to go limp.

  • Payment Due

He froze there for a moment. The bump in the middle had most definitely moved and he’d heard something like a gasp not animal perhaps human female

Lee was not scared.  No but he was hesitant if there was a person under the tarp might it try to jump at him or perhaps try to run.  He repositioned himself to be between the lump in the tarp and the door and he put up his right arm ready to catch an escapee.  For the second time he reached out for the tarps corner and brushed it with his fingertips then his thumb caught it. He counted down to three and yanked it off.

There was a blur of motion; in fact Zia had heard him enter. She was ninety percent positive that someone had sent her father and the other man away. But she couldn’t be certain not only that somebody was in the shed with her and that somebody might find her

She heard the person come closer and suddenly the tarp was yanked off her head. She had almost forgotten where the door was but she made a blind leap for it only to end up with an arm around her

She stifled a shriek and fought off the body. But he was taller and stronger

“Hey. Hey!” He said, as he wrapped both arms around the girl. He could see and feel the body was female, and scared out of its wits. ”your okay, I won’t hurt you, honest.” He was trying to speak softly, in case the men came back. It was obvious to him, she was what they were looking for.

“Look,” he finally said grabbing her around the waist and holding her left wrist with his right and right elbow with his left. “ I’m not letting you go until you talk to me”

She struggled a little but by now he had her firmly.  His mouth was near her right ear and she could feel his heartbeat in her shoulder blade. She was hyperventilating and had closed her eyes tight.  He wasn’t her father or the man who assaulted her. Still she didn’t trust him or his intentions.

“ I know they were looking for you,” he whispered as he felt her stop struggling.  “And I know you were hiding from them; But tell me why you were in my shed, and why you were hiding from them, and I’ll let you go.

Zia’s popped open.  She was scared and scared to say the words. But he was asking and she had to respond with something.  She struggled to formulate ideas.  It was difficult.

Finally she opened her mouth and out came the words, “my dad she said he let the other man —“ she swallowed,  And again her eyes closed.

“ One of those men were your dad?” Lee asked, And he was trying to see her face now trying to guess her age. She nodded. “ and he let the other man do something to you?” He whispered. Again she nodded. He swallowed then almost afraid to ask or guess what she was holding back. But it didn’t really matter if her father had allowed the other man put his hands on her in any way, it was wrong, if she hadn’t given her permission

  • Skyfel: mountain recovery

“Mom! Your embarrassing me!” Jeremiah exclaimed looking around. But no one else was within twenty feet except Gerald.

“I am embarrassing  you?” the woman was truly furious now. But she turned her back on Jeremiah. “Micheal,” she turned to him. “Darling. I have some chocolate in my purse you and I are going to have some while we look at the view.”

    “Okay!” Michael was excited.

“Hey! I want some chocolate.” Jeremiah demanded.

“No, no. I wouldn’t want to embarrass you.” she waved a hand and began to walk around the car to the driver’s side, leading Michael with her.

    “Mom!” Jeremiah cried.

The woman ignored this, got to the car, and let Micheal Go to dig around inside the vehicle. Her rear was elevated in prefect view.

“Mom! “ Jeremiah said again. “Mom!”

Gerald looked at the time again. It was 10:42 am. It was now less than ten minutes.

The woman emerged with a chocolate bar she smiled to herself and then at Michael. She shut the drivers side door and took Micheal’s hand and returned to where she had been standing before.

“MooOM” Jeremiah sounded like a whiny kindergartener now.

“Okay.” The woman was opening the chocolate. She unwrapped it and gave a crunch to Michael, who took it eagerly.

“Thanks mom!” he said happily. And then he took a bite.

The woman took a chunk as well and faced the view. They chewed in silence for a momment.  In the silence Gerald glanced again at the time.  It was 10:44 am. It was so close he felt like biting his nails.

When he looked back up, Jeremiah was approaching his mother. “I’m sorry, mom,” He said solemnly. He slipped his phone into his pocket. “May I please have a piece of chocolate?”

His mother looked at him slowly again.  “I want you to look at the view for two minutes. And then, when you are done, I will give you a piece of chocolate.”

Jeremiah sighed a great big sigh. But he obeyed and turned to the view. Gerald peeked again. 10:45 am. He looked up. All three were silently looking at the view now. Gerald allowed himself to look. It was still a perfect day. He sighed. The view just didn’t hold the fascination it had held a little while ago.

  • Rightly Wrong or Wrongly Right

Adara nodded. “I was ready to give this place up long ago. But I needed to meet Dean. He loves me too.”

“And you are sure about that? Sometimes people lie to get what they want.”  Marshall explained to her as if to a child.

Adara was shaking her head. “You don’t understand. We love each other. He’s been outside this whole time waiting for me. I was supposed to go back sooner, but I fell and forgot. Check the tapes. I got out of Dean’s car and fell on the way to the gate. And I hit my head again and forgot. But he’s been parked in visitor parking this whole time. Do you think he’d sit there upright in a car for forty-eight hours if he didn’t love me? And he didn’t take my purse. The robbers did.”

“Robbers?” Marshall asked. He sat down on the bed. “Adara, what are you saying? What happened that night?”

“Like you said. It’s almost 7 am, and we don’t have time to explain.” Adara shrugged, “But I love Dean, and I will find a way to get back to him. I’m not going to Florida. I’ll jump out of the plane. Or maybe I’ll jump out of the car and run to him.”

“Don’t do that!” Marshall replied, grasping her hand. “Listen, let me help you. If you feel that strongly about the man, I will help you. But you have to promise one thing.”

“What?” She whispered. Adara trusted him now as he was family and had been there at her birth. Marshall had stuck around to help raise her. He was better than her father. He was her uncle.

“You must call me after things calm down in a week or so. Call me, and I want to meet the man; I want to always be in touch. Don’t just disappear. I mean, of course, things need to blow over. But after, you must call me.” Marshall paused and wrinkled his brow. “And one more thing. If he ever hurts you….”

Adara shook her head. “He won’t, Marshall; he’s like you but even better and taller and stronger and….” She smiled dreamily, thinking about Dean’s body.

  • Wreckage after Pulse

The moment of impact was deafening and the movement violent. Julia was sure that she was going to be torn apart. She was waiting for the pain, waiting for the moment of death. But it never came. She seemed to hurt, though it suddenly got bright as it had been dark. The lights had gone out as the crisis began. It was so bright it was brilliant.

Abe felt a pressure on his legs, but he didn’t open his eyes to look. It hurt and pinched and went numb. The noise was so loud that he felt as if his eardrums had exploded. And the shaking was so violent, he was worried that it might induce labor.

Julia didn’t want to open her eyes. She didn’t wanna look. She didn’t want to see the approaching water. But the brightness startled her. And she blinked. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see that the plane had been torn in two. But it was bright somewhere in front of her.

She couldn’t quite focus on it there were people screaming and yelling and debris was everywhere but it was definitely 5 to 10 feet in front of her. Then she saw it; the plane was missing. She didn’t know where it was. She didn’t know if had broken off or if it had disintegrated. They had been put somewhere near the back, almost the back row, but not quite.

Abe was still murmuring to her. Her left ear was near his chin. It’s gonna be OK, he said. It’s gonna be OK with gonna make it.  He was saying.

She realized then that his feet were over hers. At least one of his legs, she looked down in her lap. The chairs of the seat in front of them were crushing them. And she was numb. But his leg had stopped the worst of it. She wondered if he was OK and wanted to ask if he was in pain. She couldn’t see any blood.

She wanted to speak. She wanted to ask him, but the den and the screaming around her was so loud that she didn’t think she could speak loud enough for him to hear her. her chest hurt. It was hard for her to breathe. She was breathing as deeply as possible and still could not get enough air. Her fingers and hands were holding Abe’s shirt. She gripped tightly.

It was then she realized they weren’t moving anymore, at least not like they had been. There was water on her feet. She realized that they would sink if they didn’t move. She jumped a little. And tugged on his shirt.

Abe had been in a state of calm. His world was closed around Julia and himself. They had survived and wouldn’t listen to anything, only focusing on Julie’s Heartbeat. He could feel that they weren’t moving anymore; the force of the impact had been so violent. His legs were crushed, he wasn’t even sure if he could move them anymore. But he was alive, and julia was alive. They weren’t dying yet.

  • Moment Lost

  • Daddy’s Girl

During that 48 hours. She did not see her mommy. She asked Daddy where she was and every single time Daddy said don’t worry about it, mommy is safe. She didn’t question Where that safe place was. Daddy could have a nasty temper if pushed too far. She had been hit by Daddy before. She was not going to risk it.

But by the second day, she began to worry about Mommy. The feeling in her stomach was only getting worse, and all she wanted was mommy to come and called the Doctor. It wasn’t a period. She had had periods before, only a few. And they didn’t feel good. But they didn’t hurt this much.

Mommy was her everything. Mommy was always there. Mommy had never not been there. Every time she was sick, every time she hurt herself, Mommy was there. This was the first time that Mommy hadn’t been there.

Melissa knew that Mommy wouldn’t abandoned her. She knew that Mommy loved her. She told her every day. She would tell Mellissa that she loved her before and after work; she would tell Melissa she loved her before bed and in the morning when she got up. And she would tell Melissa that she loved her before she went to school. And when she came home. So where was Mommy now?

Mommy hadn’t been happy recently. She knew that she hadn’t liked what Daddy had been doing to Melissa. She supposed that she should have talked to Mommy more about it. Mommy might have had some answers. But it was right after it started that Mommy started to look miserable and depressed. Melissa had felt that she couldn’t talk to Mommy about anything. Not when she was sad.

Melissa remembered the last day she had seen Mommy happy. That had been the day of her real birthday. She remembered them sitting at the dining room table. Melissa had looked at daddy, across the table and bit her lip. He was doing it again touching her foot under the table. Melissa didn’t like it. It made her uncomfortable somehow.

  • “Kidnapping of Margot”

“Come on, ill take you somewhere safe, a hotel.” Davy whispered. He took her arm to balance her.

“And where will you be?” she hissed, peering into his eyes.

“I am a PI. I am investigating him. I will be coming back here.” He explained with a shrug.

“Why?” She demanded. She wanted to cross her arms but he was holding one of them.

“Because. I need to get all the evidence I can. I have to bring him down for my client. And I have to bring him down for you.” He ran his hand down her arm from her elbow to her hand and gave her and a squeeze

“Prove it to me!” she demanded narrowing her eyes.

“Margot, it’s dangerous.” Davy hissed.  He didn’t like the suggestion. He wanted to get her away.  But if she wasn’t going to believe him without it, maybe it was something he would have to risk.

“You say you love me, I say I like you, I like you a lot. But I still do not trust you! Prove to me you are collecting evidence, and I will kiss you,” she paused, blushing, and added, “on the cheek.” She figured it was something that he couldn’t resist.

Davy stared at her, blinking. He hadn’t wanted to insist that she come. If he got caught by her father— But the kiss changed that. No. He couldn’t leave her behind now at the risk of losing out on a kiss.

“ OK.” He said, blinking rapidly. “You’ve talked me into it. But we have to do something first.” He stepped back quickly and pushed past her.

“What?” she asked, confused.  She watched him move into the room.

He glanced back at her and nodded towards the bed, and then walked to it. “ Well, there’s a possibility that he might come in to look. And if he thinks you’re in bed and asleep, he might not find out you’re missing for much longer.” Davy explained softly.

Margot listened. She agreed with his logic and it did make sense, still the bed made her feel awkward.  She stayed back and watched as Davy up the pillow, sheets, and blankets to look like someone was asleep. He glanced up at her and smiled, seeing she was watching him.

He stepped back and looked over his handiwork. He nodded and then returned to her side. “ What do you think?” he asked, nodding

  • A Foot from the Edge

The phone rang at 6. My mom had just gotten home. I remember I was washing the dishes thinking about the day, about the trip to the pool, and then at home I had just started reading the Lord of the Rings to Tommy. I had already read The Hobbit, he loved it.

“And what happens next, Holly?” he had asked me.

My mom answered the phone. “Hello. Who is this?” She said. And then there was a long pause and a couple of O’s. And then a gasp. And then, “Oh my God, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Yes, yes, I know. I’ll tell her.” Her voice was cracking. She hung up the phone and turned to me.

I dropped the cup. I had been washing and it broke into little chunks. Shards of glass spread all over the sink edge, and some rained down on the floor.

“Holly.” I grabbed the garbage can, cutting my feet on the glass and I started shoving the bits into the can, cutting my hands.

“Holly!” I started cleaning up the floor. Ignoring her voice.

“Holly, please.” My mom tried to pull me up. I finished and ran out of the room.

“Holly!” my mom called, but I was already in my room. I looked at the door and locked it. Lay down in my bed and stared out the window. I could see stars. Lots and lots of stars.

“Holly,” my mom was at the door trying to open it, but she had found it locked. “Holly,” my mom said, “please talk to me.”

I said nothing. My mom left and Swifty came over to me and laid on my stomach. He was purring loudly. I don’t remember much else. I felt asleep. I dreamed about Tommy. I remember him laughing, and then I remembered blood was on his face. And he was reaching for me, calling. “Holly Holly help me.” They had been on the way to a movie. His mom was taking him to see a movie.

Swifty was curled up beside me when I woke up. My hands were covered with dry blood. At first I thought, Tommy. It was Tommy’s blood, but it wasn’t. I remembered the glass. It was 7:00 AM.
