Coping Mechanism

The Producer
That was how on Friday morning. I came to be in some of their hand-me-down clothes. In front of Mr Carmel. I was shaking like a leaf. He was a monster of a man. I could tell when he walked in that he would hurt me even without trying. I could see the bulge in his pants. Stewie had no such bulge. And it only got bigger when he looked at me.
He was very attractive. He was good enough looking that he could have starred in his own pictures. But he had to be behind the scene. He looked at me with some even stronger than Stewie had in his eyes when looking at me. It made my stomach twist into knots.
When the wardrobe woman, Helga, took me away she had much advice. “ You know, dear, You don’t have to go through with it. You could leave now.“ she said, As she held various colors up to my face. “ He’s only going to use you in a very nasty way, and you can do so much better than him.”
I stared at her with my eyes huge, listening but not agreeing. Finally, when she paused to dig around in the closets I responded. “ But to Mr Carmel, he can make me famous if I cooperate, yes?”
She looked up at me, apparently surprised I could speak. Then she clicked her tongue and bought me her outfit choices. “ Yes, but at what cost? He will abandon you in a few months, And it would be a sheer miracle if another studio picked you up at that point.“
“ But no matter what I would have made those movies for him. I would be immortalized, if I don’t use any extra money and live cheaply I will have enough for the rest of my life!” The path was so clear to me. If I was a good girl for him. He would keep me for many months and I would make four or five movies and then I would have a couple million. I wouldn’t waste it like the average starlet. I would save it and then when it was over, even if no one else picked me up for other movies, or if I only got secondary roles, I would still have enough for the rest of my life and never have to worry or depend on another man again.
Helga I looked at me thoughtfully then, for a moment. Then she shook her head, “ I have yet to see a starlet follow such a plan, But if you think you can do it and you are able, then it ought to work. But be wary. Success will go to your brain and you will be changed by Mr Carmel, even if you are the best for him he will hurt you.”

Neighboring Strangers
It was a man and his back was turned to the door. He seemed to be looking up and down the road. Katana hesitated for a moment. She didn’t want to talk to a male or female. She didn’t want to talk to anyone. But this was an emergency situation. What if he knew something about her aunt? As she watched, the man stepped off the small porch and began to walk away slowly.
Katana’s heart skipped a beat. She had waited too long. He couldn’t leave. She had to talk to him. She gripped the front door handle and pulled the from door opened with a jerk. It came back so fast it hit the doorstop with a thud.
Ric heard the noise and stopped to turn back. There was the girl in a flowing dark dress, the tips of her shoulders were exposed and she was flushed, making her lips redder and her cheeks pinker than normal.. She didn’t speak but she was looking at him wide eyed and expectantly.
“You are home.” He spoke gazing at her. He was surprised at her outfit, it was the last thing he would have thought she would be wearing.
Katana thought she recognized him now. She was sure he lived on the street. But she wasn’t positive. He hadn’t asked her a question or said anything that needed a reply so she stayed quiet.
Ric felt awkward. She was dressed for a dinner date and he couldn’t remember for a moment why he had come over to talk to her. The bombings, yes that was it, and the power was off, he needed to know if she was okay.
“I came over here to see if you were okay.” He smiled at her, trying to relax himself. “My brother and I, we were in Napa. I didn’t know if you knew what has been going on, but there have been some bombings. I manage a store in the outlets and my brother, he works there too, and a bomb feel right across the parking lot.”
He took a step towards her and paused. She seemed to be listening closely but she still didn’t speak. “I didn’t even wait. I kicked the only customer out and told my brother to get his butt out the door and we left. But by then we could see smoke rising from around the city. And target along the freeway it exploded as we past.” Ric paused again, waiting for another reaction. But there was still not a word from the girl. “We made it out of town and back here, of course. We almost didn’t. The car behind us got hit with debris.”
Katana had been listening closely. She hadn’t heard anything that would imply her aunt was okay or not. But she had heard many things that confirmed there were dead and injured people in Napa and beyond. If the news was right about the bombings that meant the news was right about the nuclear bomb. In that case there would be millions of dead or dying.

Skyfel: slave
Donte smiled back and touched her face. “You are so beautiful.” He was fighting the urge to kiss her. But he was determined to have her drive relationship. He was there to help her. If she wanted contact she will tell him and he would give it to her.
Mia looked up at him through her eyelashes. “I think you’re the only one that thinks so.”
Donte tilted his head. “ no sweetheart, I don’t think that’s the way it works. I think actually you’re so beautiful, like from Gods fingertips to earth, that men were scared of you, and left you alone. Until the sky fell course. You can always tell when a woman is an angel. And you are one.”
Mia’s eyes suddenly had tears. “A fallen angel.” She whispered and then cried.
Donte was startled. That was not what he had meant at all. Mia was too precious to be a fallen angel. She was like something untouched by man that had been captured and dragged into this house and violated a thousand times.
“No, no baby. You are too precious for that. You are one of Gods angel, or a forest nymph. You aren’t evil. You are good, kind, sweet, and gentle.” He paused because she was crying still.
He wrapped his arms around Mia and Rocked her gently Until the crying slowed. “Mia I know that someone called you that in the past just like someone called you a whore. You aren’t anything bad. You are a good woman you are a little like a child in a woman’s body. And I love you so much it makes my chest hurt, here.” He moved one arm and pointed to the center of his sternum. “If I were to lose you I wouldn’t want to go on. I Would pine away. You Are the best thing that has ever happened to me. The only other good thing that ever happened to me in my life was being born to my mother. She is gone and you are here. I already love you as much as I love her. And I’ve only known you for a few days. My mother would have loved you.” He kissed her forehead.

Self harm

Moment by moment
Half asleep, she imagined her curtains moved as her newfound protector came into her room through her opened window. She almost slipped into a dream when a disturbance startled her awake. Someone was jiggling her doorknob. Someone on the other side wanted in. “My imagination.” She breathed in sharply and held her breath. She did not move, afraid if she peeked towards the door, she would see the darkness spreading, blocking the light in the hall. The noise stopped, and faint footsteps and creaking of hallway floorboards faded away. “Let me have dreamed it,” She whispered. “Please let tonight be okay. Please let me be okay till morning.”
Silence reigned for several moments. Sleep slowly began to overtake her again. Hovering on the boundary of a dream, she felt someone sit down on the other side of the bed, the side by the window. She did not move, but the feeling of security washed over her again in a surge.
“You’ll be okay.” The whisper came to her ears, too low for her to hear. It came from above her and behind her.
“How can I be certain?” She asked, or thought, she was unsure. Sleep was so imminent. “You’ll leave again, and I will be alone.” She let out an enormous sigh; her eyes were closed. She did not want to open them. She did not want to move to check if someone was behind her. She was too tired.
“I’ll stay right here till dawn.” His voice replied. “I won’t leave you.”
“What about after dawn? Then you’ll go.” She spoke. Sleep had wholly engulfed her. She was so exhausted.
“I won’t be far away. I’ll know when you need me.” She felt something brush her hair. In her mind, it was her protector’s strong hand, and he was behind her, leaning over her.
“What about Matthew?” She let awareness go. She could barely remember where she was. She was not even sure she was speaking. Did she think these phrases?
“Matthew can’t harm you. I’ll be here.” The hand lightly brushed against her again but did not leave. Katherine fell into a deep untroubled rest. She was safe, for now, until the dawn. She could rest and not worry about tomorrow.

Aftersickness
“That isn’t how it works. Fifty is over the hill.” Josh rolled his eyes. “Just because your thirteen doesn’t make me over the hill. Nana is over the hill.”
Rachel jumped to her feet and turned around. “Nana, josh says you are over the hill.” Josh did a face palm.
“What? Pills? I thought you said my pills were lost.” Said another weaker voice. But Raven could not see whoever was making these noises.
Raven felt sure she was dreaming still. She seemed to be in the middle of a sitcom about…. Something. These people were acting like it was every day. She couldn’t even move her open her mouth, and they were talking and arguing about their ages.
Abruptly the girl’s face was back peering at her, inches away. “Can you say anything? Try to tell me your name.”
“Maybe try some water.” Said Josh, but raven couldn’t see him, the girl was so close to her. “I am sure she’s very dehydrated.
“Then give it to me.” Said Rachael, putting her hand on her hip and turning away to grab something from Josh.
“Yes ma’am.” Josh replied, raven couldn’t see but he was rolling his eyes again.
Rachael now had a bottle of water in her hands. She bent over Raven and held the water to her lips. “Take small sips. I don’t want you to choke.”
“Wait,” Josh said; he was behind Raven now. “Let me prop her head up a little.” Raven felt herself being lifted a little; when she was set back down, she could see more space around her instead of just the sky and faces. They were outside and surrounded by trees, no houses or buildings in sight.
“Okay,” Rachael leaned closer, bottle in hand. “Try to open your mouth, just a little, so I can give you some water.” She pressed the plastic against Raven’s lips.
